If you really think 'citrus' smell will do the trick, you might combine the 'new' fad of polishing the tractor using Lemon Pledge. I use this to polish my tractors and it works good.

Don't have any idea as to how cats react to it, as there are no cats around here to test it out. Maybe they know better. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There's a product called Boundry that is available in granular and spray form. Doesn't work too good out in the elements, but may in the barn/shed

Our horse pasture used to be enclosed with an electric fence. One hot summer day I was working on the barn from inside the fence line. No shirt, really sweating in the afternoon sun. (I know you know where this is going) Well, I stepped back from the barn and right into the electric fence. The top wire caught me across my back. It didn't kill me but it sure got my attention. It didn't really hurt, but that sudden jolt makes you not want to do it again.

I had a chocolate lab at the time that would dart under the bottom wire (18" off the ground) to run in to the pasture after an errant frisbee or just to follow us. She must have gone under that wire a thousand times without hesitation. Well one day she had just gotten out of her pool (one of those plastic kiddy pools we used to keep her out of the muddy trickle of water nearby). She darted under the fence and let out a short yelp. She would never go under that fence again.

I've since replaced the electric fence with 4x4 posts and 2x6 rails. Got me a PHD out of that deal! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't piss into the wind or onto an electric fence!

It's Lambert K Dog & Cat Repellent - Indoor & Outdoor. My tractor is in a shed with open front, so does get some wet, but not steady rain.

Thanks for the response. I thought that maybe there was a new product on the market that I wasn't familiar with. The Lambert Kay product is OK, but I had lots of people tell me that it didn't work well or at all. I retired from the Pet Industry and even though we sold it is the stores, we didn't recommend it for that reason. If a customer asked, we would tell them that it worked for some, but not all.... One customer told us that her cat liked it and would roll in the area that was sprayed as if it were "catnip"... All cats are not alike....

Re: how to keep cats off tractor

I would encourage cats to sit on my tractor as they would keep the damm mice out of the engine. What harm exactly does a cat DO to a tractor? Geez, the problems some people have...
now if I could find a way to keep my brother off the tractor, that would be worth something. :) Mark

I kept my horse at my Grandpa's for a while. I was doing some fence work. I had the main lead from the electric fence box held with pliers, and was scraping it off to clean it up. No big deal, just using insulated tools.

Well, my nosey old horse walks up to see what is going on. He nudges my arm with his nose. My hand slips and touches that wire, which conducts up across his nose. We both got a good jolt off it. He ran around bucking and kicking and really hooin it up for a few minutes after that /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I don't mind them sleeping on the equipment, at least the equipment in the shed. What irks me is when I have the tractor outside sitting, and they whiz on the tires. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My wife has one cat, a large neutered Tom, that likes to wait for me to open the garage door. He saunters in and climbs up on the seat of the 4 wheeler. Every time, before he leaves, he lays a loaf right under it!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Don't get me wrong, I do like cats. We probably have about 30 or so around the barns and 5 house cats. I don't claim any of them. All belong to my wife. I LOVE my wife and I TOLERATE the cats. If I didn't, I might be sleeping in the barn with them.

If you came for the darn mini dachshund, you wouldn't have that many cats left after she got there, and the wife would have loved the dog and your even more. Instead, I got stuck keeping the little runt!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Do you know what you are doing???

You are eliminating my options. I am going to have to drive 700 miles to come and get that dog. If I have to do that, I am expecting Pete, you, Lamabur and the rest of the N.E. group to at least get together and have a really good story telling session. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'll bring some cats for you if you want??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe you like them climbing over everything, but I do not. First the tractor, then the vehicles,,,,, with "scratches" everywhere!!

Geez, the problems some people have...

I consider it a problem. One that I will correct!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: how to keep cats off tractor

A cat has been known to shred a seat or 2,a neighbor of mine replaced one on his New Holland seats and then drove nails in a board and put the board on the seat to keep the cat off.

Re: how to keep cats off tractor

I'm suspecting that a topic about cats wakes up all the "dogs" on this forum. I'd like to know just how many dogs there are....some I've seen are reddog, leaddog, wheeldog..... there must be a story behind these names. I haven't figured out if leaddog is of the musher variety, or the metalic kind.

Re: how to keep cats off tractor

Everyone knows that dogs are good and cats are evil. Just kidding. However I don't remember having seen any handles on this board with "cat" in them ??

I prefer the electronic rodent repellers to the live ones, less trouble and works great.

I agree with the "noise making" ideas. My experience with cats has shown that they do not like loud noises.

Daryl,
Does that refer to a kitty or a clatterpiller ?

Re: how to keep cats off tractor

Dogs... Now when you started this, i remember about some dumb asses that live in the same village as my brother...

Those people are both contractors and farmers, all of their nephews from 6 to 16 years do the work on the farm (cheap labor) and the two brothers are always contracting.

Some years ago they bought a brand new Fendt 515C tractor with all the gadgets, among the gadgets the most expensive model, air suspended GRAMMER seat.

Sadly someone forgot to close the cab door over night. The dog was pregnant, and was looking for some material to make a place for the coming puppies.

The dog climbed into the cab, ripped a cushion of the (still almost new) driver's seat and took it, to put the puppies on it.

That's something else than a cat scratch !!

By the way, cats hate dogs too... borrow a Jack Russell terrier... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
