How to paint a tractor...

Last spring (2006) I decided to fix the Radiator on my 1950 Case DC. It had been leaking for close to 25 years (more like weeping) where the top tank bolts to the core. I had a spare core and 'only' needed to swap them out. Radiator assy, with top and bottom tanks and side plates weighs close to 300 pounds, and naturally, most of the bolts broke off. After i removed, drilled/taped everything, I figured I'd slop a coat of paint on the side supports, since the left side was badly rusted and looked worse then the rest of the tractor (see first picture). Then I figured I'd go agead and strip the top and bottom tanks and paint them as well. Before I knew it, the entire tractor was in pieces all over the pole barn getting sand-blasted, wire brushed, sanded and straightened. Everyting was primed and painted and several weeks for paint to get good and hard before assembly. The loader (Horn-draylic) was originally Farmall Red, but I decided to go with gloss black for a good contrast. My one or two week project ended up spanning into late October. I was able to find decals, but 15 minutes of exhaust heat caused the three pin stripes to peel off. I ended up re-doing the hood and painting the stripes on. I still use the tractor for Driveway grading and snow plowing, but now I wipe it down if it gets rained on and keep it covered with dropcloths when in the barn (prevents bird poop droppings). The Girls all wanted it to be in their Christmas Photo.

Awsome job on the Case! I hope you keep a loaded shotgun handy with those girls around. I'd imagine the potential sons-in law are lined up at the gate! (BTDT, glad mine are now married)

Nice job Skent!

I hope those dogs are trained to attack moony eyed young bucks, 'cause them daughters of yours are sure to attract attention! Glad I have a boy!

The boys don't need to fear me and my shotgun. . . .

All the girls have their own. We shoot skeet at least every two or three weeks.

The oldest (Alex) has graduated to a .410. She says it's too easy using a 12 Gauge.

Samm likes to smile!

I nicknamed her Ellie Mae!

Hard to believe you are on the east coast! I thought that raising kids right only happened in the midwest! ;-)

Well Spiveman, if you are able to deal with calves, put on an FEL and fix the house you're probably able to fix a tractor. Just takes persistence and a large wrench.

Remember that anytime you get to a problem, there are TBN troupers ready to virtually parachute in to help.

Keep hydrated in the heat!

I certainly will keep that in mind. This is the coolest site I've ever seen.

No joke about the heat. My partner stretched about 1,000 yards of barbed wire on a weak section of fence in 103 degree heat and said he drank 3 gallons of water from noon 'til 5:00.

And before anyone from Pheonix makes fun of that temp, remember, it's not the heat... (everyone now) it's the humidity!!!

Holy Cow - you are a man after my own heart! Great work on the tractor and on raising your daughters. I have a three year old girl and am already planning for that fateful day when a suiter comes calling. This is the side that my wife and I plan for them to see. (first pic) Here's a couple shots of my little one. She loves to sit on my saddle on the saddle stand I made last spring. And lastly, a picture of my daughter on there with me last year. That picture was not a set up - notice what she's doing? "Draw!"

Now then, back on topic, that really is a beautiful tractor. Funny how a little thing turned into a full blown project. I'm afraid that's what mine will turn into when I get started - that is IF the first part turns out OK. Thanks for the pics.

It is great to see other girls shooting. I have seen more and more women take up shooting and it is great for this sport. Hopefully Ava will continue to shoot when she gets older but right now she got her first gun just the other day (early birthday gift). She loves to shoot but has to work on aiming still. The stock on this gun is a little long and I have thought about buying another to cut down to make the gun fit better for her. And she picked the color.

This gun also has a safety lock built in and is a single shot. Crickett.com, Keystone Sporting Arms, Inc. Davey Crickett, My first rifle, New with safety lock, .22 rifle, Davey Crickett kids club, rifles, accessories, scopes Keystone Sporting Arms, Inc., Davey Crickett, My first rifle, New with safety lock, .22 rif

The pic is Ava shooting with her Poppa helping.
