How to stop cars from turning around in my driveway

Does anyone think the chain idea with the Might Mule would work? In theory, it seems like it would work well. It will lift 300lbs. The chain wouldn't weight nearly that much.

use plastic chain with all links super-glued together and paint same color as galvanized chain

That's how people make the news as 'victims' of a neighborhood dispute.

I have the same problem. Very rural place. I get cars, SxS's, and four wheelers in the summer....snowmobiles in the winter.

My lawn gets torn up and it ticks me off. People can be such a-holes.

My parents put their gate far enough off the road to allow a large vehicle to pull in then reverse out in order to turn around. It was only in a couple of weeks before someone backed in with a trailer, damaged the gate and drove off. I learned from that to put our gate (to keep deer out, not for security) really far back from the road with the fence curving in to meet up with it. We don't lose much usable land and I'm fairly confident that drivers turning around aren't going to hit the gate.

Our driveway has a curve just as it goes over an eight foot drop to a streambed. People in a hurry kept cutting the corner and I could see what was going to eventually happen. I lined the inside of the curve with 100 lb rocks. They are highly visible and people drive slowly and in exactly the right place now. This might be a solution for you to stop people driving onto the grass. If you made the driveway a few feet wider on each side and dropped the rocks on that they wouldn't be a pain to mow around.

Here's an "outside the box" idea. As "ruffdog" mentioned I can't imagine why folks want to turn around in your driveway on a curve on a highish speed road, but I'm guessing that they only have a few seconds to pick a spot to do that. If you could disguise the first 20 feet or so of your driveway to make another driveway a more attractive choice it would solve your problem. Here is a photo of a "green driveway". It looks like a lawn, but it's grass growing in a plastic structure that supports the weight of vehicles driving over without causing ruts.

Here's another idea. The only downside is that it might discourage people legitimately coming to your place from wanting to turn into the driveway.

I drive in my yard all the time, people park in my yard. Never had a rut. Ive had large semi truck drive scross my lawn with no ruts. Had a full concrete truck not leave ruts.

Must be pretty wet or soft for a car to leave ruts. I have a hard time understanding why it's a problem if they turn in the driveway.

My wife recently got lost, turned around by pullung into a paved driveway. She said an old guy ran out screaming at her for turning in his driveway. It's stupid, there's no harm. With road setbacks, she was probably still on the ROW and not on his property to start with.

Your driveway looks nice, wide and inviting! Your house probably looks very nice too.

Park a couple of rusty old wrecks up front right up to the edge of the driveway. The more dilapidated the better. Add a few ruts in your driveway. A ditch where a culvert would be is a nice touch too. Make people think this isn't a nice safe place to turn around at.

I am going to try to move the split rail fence corners closer to the driveway and put large bushes in. What really ticks me off is when the person did pull into my lawn, I just seeded it and put straw on it so if you looked at it, you knew it was just seeded for grass. It was pretty obvious looking. It was just ignorant what they did. Plus, I have a 7 year old that plays in the front yard. Not that she is that close to the driveway entrances, but you never know.

OK, I would never allow a child to play in a yard adjacent to a main highway. Not unless the yard was fully enclosed with chain link ad well away from the road edge.

Forget about the child running into the road, or cars turning around, but I often see stories of wrecks where vehicles end up in yards or houses/buildings.

We live in a rural area outside of Pittsburgh on a curvy road with my driveway being the low point between 2 slopes and in a curve. My driveway is like a Walmart parking lot at 120' wide and 350' long. Its wide enough that last week I did a U-turn in my driveway with my crew cab and 28' travel trailer. It's nce to be able to that!

I honestly do not mind the pull in/back out turn arounds that we see often, what I do get mad with is those that drive into the middle and do a U-Turn in my driveway while I am outside looking at them and they can't even wave or roll the window down and say thank you... or hellow... They just pull in, do their thing and drive back out like they own the place or like it is a public place. It's not.
