I think Richard touched on one major flaw in our schools. The schools are proud of "teaching ahead" but are ignoring the basics.
I saw an interview the other day with a graduating high school senior. He will be graduating high school with over 20 college credit hours. I would like to sit down with him and test him on things like basic math (long division, multiplication, square root, geometry, etc) basic chemistry and physics, history, economics and government. I see too many people on shows like Watter's World who would fail miserably at the most simple test on those subjects. Yet, they can tell you all about the latest Bieber escapade, and can brag about their high score on some video game.
