How would you [safely] take down this tree?

Lol at this thread. At least the OP has been responding unlike some of the other zombie threads that go on forever with no responses or updates.

Just get a chain or big rope over it, and tug gently with your big heavy tractor. I suspect it'll fall right down. Dead for 5 years, means it will be brittle and weak.

I was out in a different area today and heard 4, maybe 6 shots fired. Immediately thought of this thread and said to myself, someone is trimming trees with a shotgun. LOL. Jon

Every 'hood has a drunk. Set up the ladder, give him the shotgun with drink of choice once it's down.
Yesterday as I was throwing trash in dumpsters a guy drove in on this, only his was a tandem dually. I bet that would pull it down! His even had a huge PTO winch. 2505063_10_0_0001.jpg

I need to start clearing some land, but the first thing I need to tackle is this wind damaged tree that has been hanging out like this for about 5 years.

Any suggestions on a safe way to get it down?View attachment 655037

As we look at that picture, ultimately how many of the trees we are looking at will be taken out? If that entire area will be cleared it would change the way I would tackle it.

Good point, Doug. I missed that he would be clearing some land. If that's the case, tackling that tree would not be "the first thing" I did. I'd clear some of the area around it. Sometimes other options present themselves once the clutter is cleared. You'd certainly have a better chance of dropping it perpendicular to the broken limb.

I would just pull it horizontally with a long rope tied to 1 end. I doubt it would resist with a reasonably heavy machine.

You mentioned where it broke off...if there is a bottom 1/2 you are also going to cut down, you might weaken it a bit with the chainsaw. However I would not fell it with the weight at the top like that.

Buy yourself two anvils and some gun power. Then read up on how to shoot one into the air. Carefully aim it so the anvil being sent into the sky will hit the branch. The most important part, of course, is to video it so we can all watch. Wait, did you say "safely"?

I think a rope over it and a pull would bring it down safely. I think either a striped drain plug or some pallets in a field are holding up the OP at this point.

Looks like one could throw a rope over it and yank it down by hand from a safe distance away.

Yep, that is what this thread is turning into :(
