YM 2000
I am considering buying a refurbished YM and have narrowed it down to two models, the 2820D and 3110D, with FEL. The two tractors are very close in all aspects except weight. The 2820d is 3825 lbs and 31hp; the 3110d is 2733 lbs and 33hp. Only 2hp difference but almost 1,000 lbs different! For an all purpose tractor should I go heavy or light?

I would go heavier, although I suspect you are comparing the weight of a YM3110, instead of the YM3110D, (2910lb). You won't notice 2hp but will certainly notice the weight in traction.

Soft ground and grass, Turf tires ? Lighter might be good

But if you want to pull anything, Weight is king!

The Fordson is rated about 25 HP and pulls quite a load. The Hurlimann has 10 hp on the old gal and can hardly pull it's own weight even with 4WD. IT will go ANYWHERE, just not pull much getting there. On the other hand, The Fordson will get stuck on a slippery slope in winter without chains. The weight does not help there. (but with the chains on, LOOK OUT! ;-)

Both tractors are 4WD. Mostly I'll be doing FEL work and bush-hogging.

Make sure you know who you are buying this ''refurbished'' tractor from.. I would hate to see you get burned. That said,,,,I have a 3110D with liquid filled rear tires.. The relief on the loader will give B-4 it picks the rear of the tractor up..I usually have a box blade on the rear as well... I have a 160 koyker loader

Kenmac, do those weights appear to be realistic to you? I have a hard time believing the 2820D can be that much heavier then the 3110D, but that's according to tractordata.com. Does 3110 have aluminum drive train, where 2820 has cast iron?

I just looked up the YM2820D in the Yanmar Operation Manual I have (from Hoye) for the 20 series tractors. It lists the 2820 at 2936 lbs and the 2820D at 3165 lbs.

The different transmissions can weigh a good bit different.

Weight is king as it relates to traction. As long as the gearing is right it will pull.

Like the previous poster mentioned in the fordson...the old ford 8N will pull a double bottom plow all day long that will just make a similar HP yanmar sit and spin. The 8n i think has like 27HP but weighs like 2x what the equivalent ym would weigh.

What is just as important as weight is the availability of parts for a given model as well. Lots of 3110D's out there, 2820D ??? Before plunking down my money, I'd give Hoye tractor and Fredricks a call, ask about parts availability for both, which has more, is the 2820D orphaned ?? I'm guessing you are in it for long term, and it might not be needed now, but sooner or later it's going to be the difference between keeping it in service or parked for lack of parts with a big loss of value to the now parts tractor.

That sound a lot more reasonable to me. I have always questioned Tractordata specs on the YM2820.

My tractor weights in at 2900 and some change. Loader adds another 500 and some change. My drive train isn't aluminum... I know nothing about the other tractor...Fredricks list a 2820D for sale... If he couldn't support the tractor (with parts, etc), he wouldn't sell it

that would make the 2820D around 100# more than my 3110D

Weight does help in another aspect. When I was doing 9-inch post holes with a bushhog auger, two 42-lbs front tractor weights made a BIG difference keeping the front end from doing a bounce every time the auger got past 18-inches in the hole depth. The negative with weight is trailering the tractor. My trailer has square tube steel construction making it doable to move the YM2610. However, if the trailer was angle steel construction, I would have to buy another trailer just to move the tractor across the county. My trailer max load is 3800-lbs, so the tractor and box blade just are under the limits.

The YM2500 and YM2610 use the 3T80 Yanmar engine. It's 31Hp. The YM2500 is the identical tractor as a John Deere 850 CUT. The YM2610 is the YM2500 with Power-Shift. When my JD850 died, Fredricks took it as a trade towrads the YM2610. I got a totally refurbished tractor with a 1-year warranty. Fredricks also has YM2610D with FELs too if you need. This would put the weight at a better lower number with all the combined accessories. Yes, a box blade is very helpful when using a FEL. You can drop the box blade down to the ground and the raise the FEL if the load is really heavy for the lifting part. Then raise the box blade a bit to move along. My neighbor has a JD650 with this setup. Not sure what Yanmar engine is in it.

yea you want weight when in the field but when towing you dont!! The light weight of the yanmar, say compared to an older american tractor is one of the reasons i chose the yanmar, also the fuel consumption is way lower than an older american tractor, usually deisel or gas.

I read one time that Yanmar compacts were supposedly designed light and narrow so as to fit in the beds of rice farmers pickup trucks.

:-0

That would make sense, but they must have a bit different pickups than we do here? flatbeds maybe?

I could most likely use my ATV ramps and drive the Ym2000 on the 01,250. with a 8' Bed. Maybe able to shut the tail gate even. Think I would get some looks going down the road.
