HST pedals: rocker or separate?

/ HST pedals: rocker or separate? #31
The advantage of the rocker vs. 2 pedal design, IMHO, is it seems it would be pretty easy to hit the wrong pedal if they are side-by-side... shades of Audi unintended acceleration. With the rocker, it's about impossible to mistake forward for reverse.
That is my issue with the 2 pedal design on the Cub and Deere I have run. I get the pedals mixed up unless I am looking at them them (worse in the dark).

Are the pedals on the deere opposite than the pedals on the cub?

I only drove the Deere once (test drive with Dad), so I don't remember.
I always mess up the Cub ones though, so it doesn't really matter which is which.

I think they both may be forward on the inside (Left), reverse on the outside (Right)

Yes, our Deere pedals are side by side with inside forward and outside reverse.

I have told this story before, but will repeat it. When my father in law got his John Deere 425, he hit the wrong pedal which put him into ten feet of water. He served in the Navy, so he had training which kept him from drowning. He got used to it though and as bp fick points out, you get use to what you use. My wife alternates between the John Deere and Kubota and has never had an issue though she prefers the Kubota.

The b series (2320) is the same size as your ck20

Yes indeed. When turned around in the seat and doing the old fwd-and-
back, I can feel for the rocker pedal reverse, but I have to look for the
2-pedal reverse, esp if I take my foot off both pedals. For this reason,
I slightly favor the rocker pedals, but I do not try to span the rocker
with my foot. I can switch directions as fast a with the 2-pedal.

I have had all 3 types of HST drive pedals, often at the same time. (The
B21 uses a rocker under the floorboard.) It can be somewhat dangerous
moving from one tractor to another. I HAVE pushed the wrong pedal on
a Deere, but I have never done that on my Kioti (with rocker).

I will say, i would not want to go back to Kubota's brake pedal layout. Having the HST and the brakes on one side is awful. While I had my Kubota, i didn't think much of it. However, after using this NH TC40D with HST on the right, brakes on the left, I LOVE the steering/cutting brakes, and have found numerous uses for them.

Yeah, Kubota is hanging on doggedly to foot clutches on HST tractors,
while other brands are eliminating that. That keeps them from putting
the brakes on the left where they belong. Or on BOTH sides, like JD.

It seems that Kubota was also slow to follow the trend of moving the FEL
joystick to the right of the seat from the loader mast. That is standard now.

It is tough being the market leader....

Not to belabor this issue but I also have had the Deere side by side and now two (separate fore/aft) pedals on my BX and much prefer the BX design as I have never operated the tractor in the opposite direction of intent - can't say the same for the Deere.

Now as for the separate, two pedal design of the BX and B vs the true treadle pedal of the older and larger Kubota's, my opinion is the BX and B set up should be relatively comfortable for the majority of operators whereas the treadle can be less comfortable for a larger percentage of operators. I say this since the angle, size (relative to someone's foot), and position of the treadle might be perfect for one person but awful for others. For example, I sat on an M59 and L45 just yesterday while perusing a dealers lot and the design of the treadle was positively awful for me. It would be close to a deal killer if I were actually shopping these tractors. The treadle was too far off to the side and I practically had to hyper-extend my foot in the down or out position to push the pedal fully forward. I've sat on many of the other Kubota models with treadles and can't say I've found one I like as well as the two pedal set up of the B/BX. Well then, that's my added two cents anyhow. :2cents:

Carry on

I personally like the above board treadle pedal as found on my BX23. It's probably due to the fact that I'm totally acclimated to it but I found it very easy to get used to.

To compare, I have a hand accuated HST L&G tractor (1966 WH) which I find to be very ackward to try to manipulate multiple tasks at the same time and I also used to own a LD lawn tractor w/side by side HST controls, which was not as easy to get used to. I will admit to going in the wrong direction on several occasions (i.e. fwd when I wanted to go in rev) but I did get used to it eventually. I will admit that the JD is what eventually sold me on a HST as a primary tractor :D

IMHO, I prefer the above board treadle pedal.

Can't tell you how many times I hit the wrong pedal on my JDX520 and backed into something... Or vice-versa. The pedals were small, very close, side by side, and I have a size 12. Really looking forward to the b2620 pedal design.... But haven't had enough time in the seat yet to make a judgement. Like Bp said... I think we all adjust... It's human nature. Doesn't mean we all don't have our preferences though. That's the beauty of orange vs green vs blue vs red.... We got a choice!
