On hills I much prefer HST, powershift (GST) type trannys can coast or be jerky during gear and direction changes on steep hills. I don't like the idea of lunging a foot or too with the disconnect feeling. Also, stopping on a hill with GST requires you to brake and hold while either in neutral or clutch depressed.
The engine rpm thing is one thing that bothered me a first too, but a diesel is speed governed. If there is no load it uses very little fuel despite rpm. This is why you get different hours per tank depending on your task in a hydro even if you leave it reved.
So, ground engaging implements, get GST, loader work, precise movements, stopping on hills etc, get HST.
I got HST after being a gear person and love it, would certainly like a GST as well for my non-loader work, not that it is bad but just a notch below the HST for loader work.
