Hydraulic chainsaw off hydraulic winch feed?

This will primarily be used to trim posts as they come off a pto powered post peeler so it will be really handy not having to start it so many times when I need to make a few short cuts.

I've seen two commercial makes of 12 volt chain saws over the years. But they are very hard to find. Maybe an appropriate sized starter motor could be used on a 120 volt saw in place of the original motor. Or just adapt a bar and gear to a 12 volt motor.

Even easier would be one of the battery saws. Sounds like it might be ideal for your use.

For example:
Stihl Battery Chainsaw

Forty minutes run time, about 3-5 seconds per cut...

You might try one of these.

1/2 NPT 16 GPM 1000-2500 PSI RELIEF VALVE

IF you are taking the flow from a valve, it may have a relief valve, and you then adjust it for 2000 psi.

From what I have read I believe my tractor has a relief valve one on the FEL but I'm going to go ahead and get the one you recommend to be safe and in case I ever use it off another machine. I grabbed a couple of 300" hoses and a few fittings and adapters to go from 3/8 to 1/2. Everything was in stock so it should be here Friday. All I need to buy is a couple of ag style male QC's to hook to the tractor. I wasn't sure which model to order from Surplus Center but I know where they are on the shelf at Bomgaars so I'll grab those the next time I'm there.

That should get me up and running. Then I need to adjust the oiler for the chain and I should be ready to cut some wood. I really appreciate all your help.

A 12 volt chainsaw. That sound interesting. Have to check that out.

I do like the new cordless saws but they just don't' have the power that this saw does (8-10 hp). I would certainly love to have a cordless set like that though. Would be perfect for many applications.

Here is a video of one hooked to a bobcat.

My gas saw could cut with it. I actually have an old Stanley hydraulic saw. I wonder if it still works.

There are plenty of gas saws that will blow this one away. They claim best power to weight ratio but that's likely because they don't count the hoses you are holding up while you use it. But it's clearly got some power from what I've seen. Plenty for cutting 6-12' material I hope which is what I plan to use it for primarily.

Sounds like it's time to knock the dust off that old Stanley and see if she still runs!

I have a hydraulic stone cutting chainsaw and three (Stanley) jackhammers. Although these tools are neat in their own way, they are very awkward to use. The tools are heavy enough and then dragging all that hose around is difficult. Cleaning the hose and coiling it up again, keeping the flat faced connectors clean and undamaged from impacting the ground, is quite the chore.

They do not seem to require much flow.

Thanks a lot. Now I've gotta find a Stanley jackhammer I can run off my tractor! LOL.

I hear ya. There are certainly some drawbacks to hydraulics. But for your application (I assume with 3 jackhammers) breaking up concrete it's likely more powerful than any electric units available and doesn't require a piece of equipment like a skid steer or backhoe so it certainly has it's place on a construction site.

There is no reason you can not handle two 25 ft hoses.

The chainsaw should work fine for your intended purpose.

Sounds like a interesting build. You also should wrap the 2 hoses together so they are protected, specially within the lines of forestry you will bet them up fast. Maybe you could get some old fire fighters water hoses to put the lines in together

JJ,

I received the relief valve and am somewhat confused as to how to properly hook this up. I figured there would be a diagram with it or on the website but I did not see one. I have a total of 3 - 1/2 npt ports o the relief valve. One is labeled Tank and is closer to the handle than the other 2. The other 2 are near the bottom and when I look at the bottom there area few marks on the bottom the the relief valve that are closer to one port than the other. I'm assuming that the marks are there for a reason.

Any suggestions on where to look for a diagram?

Farm Boy, That is a good idea on the old fire hose. Thanks.
