It is back to a further redesign situation. Yesterday, a pebble got caught between the chute rotator and the gears that are stamped into the bottom sheet metal and the rotator motor continued to turn, but unfortunately the worm mechanism stopped. The result was that both ends of the wire were broken off. Five minutes with the welder have it reattached, but I now am thinking that even the lightest steel nut and bolt is still too tough to break in this situation. I have located a 1 1/2" nylon bolt and nut, but I need a 2" one to go all the way through. I will continue to look for a longer nylon nut in the meantime, but I am not certain that this is going to be the final fix. I just don't like the way that PineRidge did his. To me, it looks too "cobbled" for my taste. I am making this post so that anyone that is following this thread thinking of making the same type of unit doesn't make the same type of mistakes. Junk...

Sorry to read that the drive coupling is still a problem. Now that it's clear how little torque it should be limited to, a section of heater hose or even plastic pipe might make a decent "fusible" coupling. You could attach it with hose clamps at first - experimenting with drive friction until it was enough to turn it but not enough to break anything.

When it's working are you happy with the speed etc? The design looks good frome here /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The speed is fine, and if anything, it could be a little faster. I did try a rubber hose and slip coupling, but it was either too tight and held well, or it was too loose and slipped. I was unable to find a good area where it would work well all the time. That is why I went back to the "positive" type of coupling. Just have to do some more experimenting with it till I find the final design that works well all the time and has the "safety factor" that is needed. Junk....
