Well i should have gone with my gut. It is the tranny pump. The doctor said they wouldn't know for sure until they split the tractor. @ 1200 in labor to split, 900 for pump, and the unkown once they get in there. They've seen this get to be a 6000 dollar repair.

What would you guys do?

I think i could do the job i just know very little about hydraulics. Or should it become scrap metal. i figured running i could get 5-8k out of it. i was planning on getting running and selling for a smaller machine. I just can't see spending up to 6k on a machine that is not worth that much.

Do you have a parts or service manual never did service work on your particular model but the JD's i worked on the pump was under the cover under the seat.

If you had a good overhaul and parts manual, and good mechanical sense, it could be done, however slow. One other option is to talk with the mechanic at the tractor place and see if he is willing to do some extra work as a paid instructor helping you learn.

I would get the service manual and dig right in without hesitation. I know nothing about most of the projects I get into before I start. And I become an authority by the time I am finished. For that kind of money I could take time off work (but I wouldn't) and do it.
First thing is to get the manual (cheap investment and you need one anyway), read the troubleshooting/inspection section and be sure you come to the same conclusion that the shop has. I have heard of more than one case where the shop took a "best guess" and was very wrong (usually on the expensive side) My $.02

Good Luck

I had a problem with my 5105 JD. The hyd fluid kept getting contaminated with water and the three point hitch would get stuck. Water problem: A boot on my joystick on the Fel had deteriorated and was allowing water to leak into the system. On the three point hitch I removed the seat and removed the relief valve under the seat. Cleaned up the valve and removed all the trash. I also flushed the system and replaced all the filters. I ran diesel fuel through the Hyd system until I removed most of the water then replaced with HYD fluid. This is what the JD house recommended. It has worked perfectly since.

Well due to lack of time for me to tinker with it i had the dealer break into it. I really like the tech working on it he seems very detailed. Anyway, it took him 10 hours to split it and diagnose the problem. He says the pto clutch is in a bazillion pieces needs to be replaced. The metal shaving and parts were blocking the tranny pump that feeds the mail pump. I don't know much about the pto clutch but the pto seemed to work fine when tilling and mowing. hmmm??? Oh well the price we pay for toys. Oh yea, its labor intensive job. He gave me a figure of 5k for his high estimate. Which means it will probably be a little over that.

Did the tech say if the tranny pump was toast? I had to split my 2030 for a different reason (pressure line to PTO clutch broke). The only parts I had to by was the line, all gaskets o-rings and new trans/hydraulic oil. I spent just over $200 with no discount for any thing. Did you get an estimate stating what parts were required? Plus an estimate of total hours to repair? What would you have to pay to take it home in a basket?
5K is too much to put a 6K tractor back to work. By the way what trans do you have? Std 8 spd, HI-LO or Reverser?
