Hydraulic hose prices (unbelievable !)

I need two ~ 25 foot 3/8" 2 wire for a thumb I am changing from fixed to hydraulic. I will get them from the local heavy equipment shop guessing $160 but is all Parker which has been good in the past.

Well, that was a monumental miss.... $450 but I remeasured and needed 30Ft each- at least it was Gates hose. I got the 90* fittings and swivels JIC and SAE perfect fit and no leaks.

You went to the "I need it today" hydraulic shop so you paid the price.

I identify and buy vulnerable hoses on both my machines and buy them online.

I bought a tc40 a year ago with half the hoses showing metal but not one leak. $300 bought every hose on the loader. I just took a hour to measure and make a list, then one afternoon to re hose the whole loader.

That plan can be even more expensive, buying spare hoses you'll likely never need, during your ownership period.

"Identify vulnerable hoses" the ones hanging out in the breeze or you alreaty broke. For me it was the hoses to the hydraulic thumb on my micro ex. They got ripped off 2x, put the $24 hose on and kept it moving. I still have spare hoses and some fittings for that.

You could say it's a waste of money...until it isnt or you could spend 4x on one hose and waste half a day+.

Have a 23/24 yr old JD 4300, blew a FEL hose and replaced all 8, cost $750 from local JD. They will always go when you need them the most. When a steering cylinder hose leaked replaced both, another $160, but the bad part was getting to the upper ends.

The hidden side of inflation and taxation kept from the eyes of the general public.
I recently added some walkways on one side of my house. I am a 1.5 hour drive with a loaded truck from the concrete plant. The price is $182.00 per yard. Plus the great state of CA has a new secret tax called Ocean Freight Fee? It’s $11.00 per yard of concrete if a pump is used on the job site. Glad it didn’t exist when I poured the other 440 yards. I almost forgot there was also $25. environmental fee and a fuel surcharge fee. All above the $182.

I'm adding diverters to my FEL to run a grapple, and a hydraulic shaker. I looked at adding hoses, but the FEL is on the smaller side, (23-hp tractor) and it just looks kludged together. Pluss the cost on hoses is out the roof.

So, I want to install metal hard lines. The problem in that option is in finding hydraulic tubing. Seems it is unavailable or ungodly expensive. I've tried all the online sources I can search out, Grainger Reed, MSC, Zoro, etc. Anyone have suggestions for sources? I can find short, 2-ft, lengths but finding 6-ft lengths is proving to be impossible.

I found steel hydraulic tubing for 4500psi in about 2 seconds on there by googling it

I always bought steel at local suppliers that deal in farm or processing equipment.
Black or stainless. Usually have to buy 10’ pieces. I have been making my own steel lines for 50 years. Cheaper and faster since dealer usually has to order them.

I just straightened the rod & rebuilt this cylinder last weekend, had to replace a fitting and one of the hoses (3/8" x 48") when I put it back together because the threads stripped out when I took it apart.

Picked them up at Fleet Farm on Sunday afternoon - the fitting was $5.59, hose was $11.99.

You straightened a cylinder rod?!?
Yup. Here's the before (pardon my messy bench):

I never tried it before, but ran out of time to get a new rod made which would be the correct solution. I used a hydraulic press. Got it straight within about 1/8" total runout, which surprised me. It's good enough for this application and should last a while.

Wow... nice! That must be a delicate operation, applying enough force in the right place to straighten the rod, without marring it to interfere with the cylinder rod seal.

The shaft already had some dings and nicks in it, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. I used aluminum plates to protect the rod in the press. Any yeah, it took a while to get it as good as it got. Then I polished the rod in the lathe to try and smooth out the pre-existing dings, nicks, and rough spots. The rod was now straight enough I could run it in the lathe without too much vibration.

It will last long enough for me to get the chance to fix it properly with a new rod, which in reality is probably going to be a few years down the road, but it's "good 'nuff fer now"

Bought my own hose and fittings and hand pump crimper cheaper than making four hoses yep it's insane

Go to a hydraulic shop or a NAPA store with a shop. They will make whatever hydraulic hoses you want with couplers for way cheaper.

Which crimper did you buy? The cheapest for proper JIC/an fittings was around $1500
