Instead of using a Civic radiator, could I get away with a transmission, oil or power steering cooler instead? I'm missing something because, to me adding a cooler would increase capacity of fluid a little bit, so how would it decrease?

By installing a heat exchanger / cooler you are removing heat from the system. By removing the heat you can use a smaller reservoir. Not uncommon to see mobile equipment with 8 - 10 GPM pumps running on a 3 -4 GPM reservoir. This is what a lot of CUT tractors have.

Our 2-85 (85 HP) White had a 20 GPM pressure compensated pump and 8 gallon reservoir. Continuos use and it would over heat in about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs.

Items to consider when selecting a heat exchanger / cooler.

Pressure drop Vs flow characteristics: Target is usually in the 5 - 10 PSI range under normal operating conditions. Check for drop with cold oil or install a by-pass valve to prevent over pressurization during cold start up.

Heat removal Vs air volume moving past it. Some catalogs are in BTU/hr some in HP.

pressure rating: In a return line this shouldn't be a concern but I don't have a clue what pressures tranny coolers run at.

Trans coolers should run around 20-25psi or so from what I can find.

Yes, but the reason for the radiator is that 30gpm at 30psi will need at least a 1" pipe, the cheapest way to get that is an automotive radiator.

28"x13" is pretty huge. Wonder if there is one smaller that'll fit a lot just as effective.

I'm coming up with a parts list for the mechanical and hydraulics needed, I know I'll be missing lines, but this should give me a visual of what I'm looking at and you guys can amend my list as you see fit.

Just have miscellaneous spool valves, hydraulic lines and fittings, 8 sprockets for #100 roller chain, unsure amount of feet of #100 roller chain (40'-80'), 14 smaller sprockets to act as bogies or tensioners for track, 25 various pillow block bearings for chain sprocket/pulleys. Hydraulic cooler, hydraulic oil filter(s). 10 1" solid steel axle shafts. 30' of 2x4x1/8 rectangle tubing, 20' 1x1x1/8 angle iron, 2 4'x8' expanded steel, 3 4'x8'x14ga sheets of sheet metal. Various sizes of grade 8 bolts.

Not my money or machine I would seriously look at finding smaller displacement pumps that will operate at higher pressure.
Reasons for this are:
1) differential pressure across a motor equals torque. If you can find a pump and motor that operates at 3,000 PSI Vs 1450 you will have the same torque with a motor that has half the displacement

2) line sizes figuring the 19.6 motor at 100 RPM (3 MPH) = 8.6 GPM at 15 FPS (feet per Second) velocity requires 1/2" hose

3) Mechanical and friction losses. Bigger the pump the more power it takes to turn it doing no work.

I don't know who makes smaller higher pressure closed circuit pumps but I would look at companies like Sauer Danfoss possibly 15 series. Eaton light or medium duty, Parker, Rexroth A10VG series , Kawasaki K3VG series. These are all companies that make HST units but Again I don't know what sizes.
