Just have a question on a 2240 John Deere . Could the steering valve assembly leaking cause the independent PTO to grind on engagement. Thanks for any answers.

All things are possible but if hyd oil level is at full mark then steering leak will have no bearing on operation of IPTO. Does your tractor have IPTO or continuous(dual stage clutch) pto? If dual stage pto my guess is pto clutch isn't fully disengaging when foot pedal is depressed

Independent PTO lever between shifters.

That's an interesting situation. The PTO grinds on engagement. Can you provide a little more detail on just what's happening here? The grinding goes away once the PTO is up and spinning? No problems pulling a load and it stops as always when shut off?

Yes I have independent PTO on my 2240 JD. When engaging the PTO with lever between the shifters. After power shaft starts to rotate a little. You can feel grinding thru lever. Upon full engagement grinding stops PTO operates fine.

I suppose pto clutch facings could have failed to the point one hears grinding during engaging pto clutch

There should be a PTO disconnect lever by your left heel that needs to be forward for the PTO to work. I am wondering if it is not fully engaged forward and is the cause of the grind when you engage the lever between the shifter? Just a thought.

No not on my tractor. They only have one or the other. Two stage is by your left heel. My PTO Lever is between shifters.

As Jim has stated, the "grinding" could be coming from the plates in the clutch pack. That would strange (at best) in my opinion, because those plates are not known for making noise at any stage of their service life. I've been though PTO clutches where the facing material is completely gone, just metal discs against metal plates and no one heard a thing. The PTO just fails to work. Even stranger still is you can feel it in the lever. That doesn't sound like a clutch disc problem.

I'm not sure what's going on either. Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it.
