Hydro Cooler Failure TC-40D

Here's a heads up on the hydro cooler problem that we developed. The new cooler arrived at the dealer today and it was easy to see that a change had been made to the original design. A support washer was added to both the inlet and outlet tube where they meet the shell of the cooler. The washer is designed so that there are no sharp edges against the tube that could cause problems. Compare this final picture to the first that we posted and I'm sure you'll see the difference.

BTW: Even though our rig was 4 months out of warranty New Holland was good enough to supply the part free. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good news, Mike. It's great that you got such good support and the new cooler looks like it will do the job much better. I know you are glad to be back in business with your TC40D. I think I would have been tempted to jumper the hoses together for short operating periods where the hydro oil would not have had time to heat up. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jim that thought haden't even crossed my mind, but you're absolutely right it could have worked for short durations.

Sorry to bring this subject back to life, but I've fell victim to the weak hydraulic cooler. It's pouring oil out at the stress crack, and I'm being forced to park it with 2 more days to go during a long holiday weekend...bummer.

Anyway, has anyone else heard any more about this from NH? My next move is to call the dealer and see what the cost are of the replacement, and then call some local shops to see what repairs may cost. My fear is that a repair won't last, but then who's to say a new replacement won't either?

Any opinions? (or facts on cost?)

My rig was out of warranty but since NH told the dealerships to replace the defective coolers as needed they knew there was a problem. They reinforced the inlet and outlet area on the new part.

I would bet that NH would extend the warranty on the part itself if asked to do so, it worked for me.

Mike by any chance did your dealer mention anything about the new oil cooler being upgraded already on the newer Class 3 models? I'm not home right now to go out and look. Thought I'd ask real quick.

Tmac my dealer is in a fog when it comes to upgrades or new technology, so no he didn't add any new information. I get new information here.

Fact is I read about the Boomer battery problem here before I made our purchase. When I asked the dealer as I was making the purchase I was assured that NH had indeed already taken care of the problem by implementing a change the year before. Yet at 50 hours our rig had the acid problems associated with the Boomer batteries and the dealer basically ignored my request for help. NH came through for us after we fired a letter off to them explaining the situation.

After returning:
Well, I assume they fixed this issue on all the newer models. I purchased my TC45DA in the spring of 2004. Here are a few pictures of the oil cooler.

Yip, that's the new style. Note the "washer" located at the base of the fitting. Also noteworthy is the way the hoses are attached to the the lower end of the cooler with a hose loop thinging. This is not for decoration.
I called my dealer and had to give him the new part number that I got off this website... He then found the note that said this new cooler replaces the old one and the tying of the hoses to the lower part of the cooler is to reduce vibration and lower the likelihood of another failure.

New cooler Price: $208.

Time to go to the local radiator shop and give that a shot first. If it fails in the near future, then I'll have to dish out the cash I guess..

I don't think a radiator shop can deal with the kind of pressures seen in a hydraulic oil cooler. Radiators run at very low pressures comparatively speaking.
