How about a T at the inlet to the hydro cooler. .

That would work. Think I'll start getting the plumbing together for the next change.

Thanks

Normal hydraulic oil temperature is approx 100 deg hotter than your ambient air temperature. 100 deg day your oil will normaily be about 200 deg.

200º sounds awfully hot to me. I did some checking yesterday and found that temperatures around 180º can cause seals to fail. I found that by doing a simple internet search. I'm also thinking that if you look right at the return port of the HST transmission, you are going to find oil much hotter than the operating temperature of the reservoir. The oil from the outlet of the hydraulic pump or the HST is the hottest. From there on, everything has a cooling effect on it.

Oil going to the HST pump is drawn directly from the reservoir. This oil would already be much cooler than at the pump and it would be even cooler after it goes through the oil cooler. To measure the temperature of the oil, you have to consider where you are in the system and where the hottest spot will be.

I don't think the reservoir oil on my tractor reaches 200º. That's just 10º under the boiling point of water. If my reservoir was that hot, I don't think I could sit above it and not be "boiling" myself.

I would agree that the maximum temperature of the oil may approach 200º right at its highest pressure point in the hydraulic pump or HST pump. I just think that's an instantaneous spike and rapidly cools from that point to something more in the 130º-150º range.

I think the question was how hot is the oil going to be at the cooler inlet. I have personaly seen oil temps of over 225 deg in the loop oil in combines and Bi Di's many times.
Oil temp in the reservoir is not as hot if the cooler is doing its job but only about 20-25 deg less when the unit is being worked.
Oil temp will vary a great deal depending on if you are mowing on a hard flat surface or weather you are using ground engaging equipment as there is no thermostate in the system. The oil cooler will only drop oil temp so many degree no matter how hot your oil is.
The 100 deg hotter than ambient temp is close guesstamation that has been used by MF, NH, Ford and Oliver that I know of for the 25+ years I have been servicing farm equipment.

I'm in agreement with you whitetiger, that's why I recommended a T for the temp gage at the inlet of the cooler.

Maybe I can provide some sample data tomorrow night. I stumbled across a used Raytek Raynger ST IR temp reader yesterday and brought it home. Seems to be pretty accurate when tested on some known temp examples. Weather permitting, I plan do some fairly heavy hogging tomorrow afternoon in the near 100 degree heat. Plan to attempt periodic readings on both sides of the cooler and the rear of the tranny case. Will post if successful.

What!? You mean you are going to get "real" data instead of just guessing? Is that allowed on TBN?

Terrific! I'm looking forward to hearing what the IR temp reader says. I've been thinking about using several probes in various locations and then use a rotary switch to change between them. That way I can use one meter face and one switch instead of multilple gages for each location. I have to find a place to mount the gage and switch. Most gages aren't very weatherproof.

Hey.. all this talk of real temp probes verses gueses and specs just jogged my memory. My (good) digital vom/oscope has a temp probe on it.. I can attach that baby up and see what my cooler runs at too.. can't wait for some seat time now!

I've got a digital thermostat that I used for HVAC repair but can't find the thermistor. :(
