Can't help you much with you MIG, I have less than 10 minutes on a MIG, my experience is with Stick and TIG. My little Everlast 160 does really well. It has paid for itself many times over. And makes beautiful welds with 7018. One of the best purchases I ever made.

I see Harbor Fright is giving the boxing trunk welders a run for their money......

All from across the pond.

I know that some people claim, prep is everything. I knew a steel boat builder that wouldn't weld a thing without prep. But I do know guys and one guy in particular that has been welding for over fifty years every day, almost never preps anything and makes great welds on just about anything he touches. Has maybe nine welders in his shop, that are mostly cranked up and rarely touched, some being mounted up high that you can't even get at them, pulling filler out of drums.

His usual comment about my welds is "well, there is enough weld".

Aside from settings, I still have not solved my issue of not being able to see. I use a cheater lense that has helped.

I wonder if he's the same guy that's been painting houses over 50 years and never preps before painting?

Sure with stick you can get away with less prep, particularly with 6011 type rods but I can tell you that welds in general even with stick are better with good prep than without it. Who really needs a bunch of inclusions in their welds from paint, dirt and rust?

I thought 'Everlast' were boxing trunks......

They also make gloves but are rather awkward for 3/32 rods.

Actually I am no believer in Primer either. Primer comes off with your fingernail, as does the paint sitting atop of it.

You need to either get better brands of primer or put top coat on as soon as primer is dry, usually within 24 hours... Waiting several weeks after prime to put top coat on is what killing your paint jobs...

I sometimes think that primer was just a clever way to sell twice as much paint. I have painted quite a bit with enamel and never had bad results or any quick degradation of the paint. So why bother with the hastle and expense of primer? Same with welding. If you can make a nice, high quality weld, without prep, why bother?
