I don\'t often post like this

I would like to share with all my latest experience. A month or 2 back I posted a link to a cheap phone service that operates via the internet. Since downloading this system I have phoned many people, A mate that live in NZ that I had not seen or heard from in 5 years, 2 lost mates that live in Qld 3000km away and a couple of folk from TBN to name a few. But today I rang an Aunt that I have not seen for probably 35 yrs, or for that matter heard from or heard about in that time. She was my mums sister, and mum died in 1979. My aunt must be in her 80s now and I had all but forgotten about her until today. I decided to do a phone search on the net; I had only a vague idea of her married name and a small recollection of the state and city she lived. To complicate this it was not in Aust as she left here after the war. After a short time on the net I found a name and address, phone number of what may or may not be my aunt. I pondered for a long time, shall I ring or not, I looked up the time on the net of this city, at this point I said what the heck and dial the number on the computer screen, on the other end I got this yankee woman yeh who’s this. From here we spoke for about 1hr, I gave her my email address. This led to my cousin emailing me, for the first time in our lives we communicated. I hear you ask were do they live: California.

Good for you Vin! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Many of us have discovered that allowing relationships to lapse, regardless of which side of the relationship does the "lapsing", is a very difficult mistake to remedy.

My brother and I had not spoken for a couple of years. It was the result of an incident that had caused some minor friction, and we just let it get blown out proportion. As would happen, I had the opportunity to watch a report on a TV news magazine type show that discussed broken relationships and why they needed to be fixed. I guess I took it to heart and contacted my brother. We've been communicating regularly ever since, which has been about 3 years.

It's a good feeling to know that by being the person that made the effort to re-establish the relationship, you're saying that you care about other people that should be a part of your life.

Maybe this is part of the "maturing" process. But I do find myself paying more attention to the people in my life that should be a part of it. And it sure feels good when you reach out to someone, and they are truly happy that you did! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Keep your new relationship going, and nurture it. It will pay you back ten fold in the years to come. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad to hear that you've reconnected with some of your family. Always a good feeling, unless they ask for money! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

...on the other end I got this yankee woman yeh who’s this. From here we spoke for about 1hr...

Back in '69 I took my old motorcycle and got on a boat to Europe and travelled the world from there a bit. While in the middle east, I ran into a guy who I really had trouble understanding for some reason. Seemed like every other sentence I was asking him to repeat...I was certain he was speaking English as a second language...I finally asked him where he was from...

"Australia..." /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Then I realized it was just his accent that was throwing me. Something similar had happened in England too...That time I think the guy was asking if I was "mad" (not meaning angry) and I could not understant the way he said it... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Answer: Maybe I was, maybe I am... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

So I was wondering, did your aunt happen to say "i wnat Goood Inglish" while you were talking to her?

Re: I don\'t often post like this

A Yank TBN'er with an accent? I can't imagine that, especially if the Yank may have been from California /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had the wonderful surprise of talking to a fine gentleman from Oz one eve. It was really cool to get to meet a person and talk over the phone/computer, and hear a voice to go with the posts I had read. It is interesting meeting folks in person or by phone, because the way people talk and inflect is often a change from the way one might email or post to a forum.

I got to talk to Vin for a bit, and I tell you, it was a really nice conversation /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: I don\'t often post like this

What I find interesting is daedongs use of the word "yankee" to describe americans, where an american thinks of people from the north-east part of the country as "yankee's".

Re: I don\'t often post like this

Here in Aust the word yank or yanky describes all Americans, However i was intrigued My cousin called herself Yankee. The problem here is things differ greatly from state to state.

She also made a reference to seppo, and so has Higgy I had not heard this before, I have had to do some homework to find it's meaning. I asked my wife and my 18yr old daughter and they had not heard it.

Re: I don\'t often post like this

Vin, When I lived in WA they referred to yanks as septic tank yanks, and as with all Australian works it gets shortened and has an o or and i put on the back, ie:

shock absorber = shocki
carburetor = carbi
garbage man = garbo

and on and on.

So septic tank yank got turned into seppo, I did not think that the vernacular was held to WA only, I heard it there a lot, and when I was in the NT and SA I heard it as well. Most of the time it was in the dongers at mine sites or on drilling platforms when the yabbo’s were off of one’s face.

Now, here in the Northeast, just try and call a Boston Red Sox fan a Yankee... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif They don't take it so well. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
