I stayed with 2x4 rafters over the loft area. The span is only 6' on each side of the roof beam. Should be no problem.

Plywood was put up on these rafters shortly after this picture was taken...

Second shot of the 2z4 rafters...this size sould give a little more head clearance than 2x6s would and also be acceptable as far as loading goes...

Your neighbor or neighbors are the likely sources of complaints and visits from the inspector. Most inspectors have way too many new projects to worry about going after projects like this.

I had to tear a shed down once from the back of my restaurant. The neighbor complained and despite all of my efforts to make amends, he refused to back down. I almost won, but in the end one of the zoning people's vacation caused a tie vote. I needed a majority to win my variance. So you can see how tenous doing it "the right way" can be.

I think you did the right thing and you will have no problems. If you get caught, plead ignorance, get your neighbor to stick up for you and it would take a bunch of real jerks on a zoning board to force you to tear it down.

Thanks for being spencer junior! His project is way to big for my budget, so it's nice to have a more modest reference point for my future barns and sheds.

I keep him around cause he works cheap...carries a "will work for beer" sign sometimes...and thanks for the compliment on the shed. I mean callin' it a barn!

Today I had high hopes of getting the final plywood on the roof and the roofing felt on it...BUT...that old shed roof just kept staring me in the face...

I concluded that I should make it level. I had some difficulty figuring out how to make the back beam [which supports the back side of the roof] level. I did some measuring and found that the old shed roof dropped about 1/4 inch per foot...in other words, over 14 feet [counting the overhang at the far end] it dropped 3.5 inches!

Sooooo...I jacked it up and added supports to make it level. The ridge line was not quite that bad...but it needed some massaging as well.

Here is what I saw this morning before I got side tracked by that old roof section...just a few rafters and on should go the plywood...NOT!

I have a piece of 2x8 in place for test purposes. I cut out that old 2x4 rafter [span is only 6 feet]. You can see how bad things are. That 2x4 should be on top of that 2x8.

About this point in time my mind started turning...concluded that I should make that old roof level and be done with it!

What happened was that some years ago I decided to use the old foundation to build a play house for the kids. Never finished it, but did put a little 12x12 deck on it.

Did not worry about level...mistake...

Then when I built that little 12x12 shed I just put it up on top of the deck...seemed like it did not matter if it was a little out of level...I plumbed the walls and that was it...I would never touch it again anyway...so what if it is a little out of level...

Moral of the story...no matter when/where/why you build it, make it level and plumb...or you may regret it later...

I ended up removing the metal clips holding the rafters to the wall, and then jacked up the roof using two bottle jacks.

Then short pieces of 2x4 were nailed in. Each one was about 1/2 inch shorter than its neighbor moving away from the camera...

I will do more to tie everything together securely later...

I only had to jack up the last 8 feet of the roof at the ridge line...

Did I mention how much of a pain it is to add new to old???

I knew I needed those two bottle jacks when I bought them last month...first use today...
