Your neighbor or neighbors are the likely sources of complaints and visits from the inspector. Most inspectors have way too many new projects to worry about going after projects like this.
I had to tear a shed down once from the back of my restaurant. The neighbor complained and despite all of my efforts to make amends, he refused to back down. I almost won, but in the end one of the zoning people's vacation caused a tie vote. I needed a majority to win my variance. So you can see how tenous doing it "the right way" can be.
I think you did the right thing and you will have no problems. If you get caught, plead ignorance, get your neighbor to stick up for you and it would take a bunch of real jerks on a zoning board to force you to tear it down.
Thanks for being spencer junior! His project is way to big for my budget, so it's nice to have a more modest reference point for my future barns and sheds.
