( How much of the refined fuel of our nation do you suppose is used in transportation?)

On average, one barrel of crude oil (42 gallons) yields about 33 gallons of gasoline, fuel oil, and jet fuel combined, so you can see that about 78% of refined crude is used for transportation. The figures for fuel oil include both diesel fuel and home heating oil though, so the actual transportation number will be a little less than 78%.

These figures come from here

Well Buckle, it sounds like our '98 Dodges are pretty consistant on being thirsty. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is a shocker; in my small town we normally enjoy lower than national average fuel prices. On the way home:

Regular Unleaded $2.69.
Premium Unleaded $2.99
Diesel $2.42

( My 98 chevy half ton will consistently break 20 mpg on cruises but sits at 16 around town. Pretty good in my book. )

I had a 97 half ton Chevy and still have a '98 half ton Dodge. The Chevy (5.7) got about 16.5 at 60mph, 15 at 72mph, and about 11 in town. The Dodge I still have (5.9) does about exactly the same. The only way they would break 20mpg is if they were on a trailer. I have to assume that yours is not a 4X4. I always buy 4X4's.

---- Mine is a 4x4 with about every option. I hand calculate each tank after filling it to the top. I suspect either I have better driving habits than you or you aren't calculating it the same way. I actually bought the GM 5.7 because of the better mileage than Ford or Dodge equivalents. It has been a great engine over the last 132000 miles. To get up to the 21 mpg point I need to sit at 60 mph on a highway cruise. It weighs between 5500 and 5800 lbs empty.

I'm with you, with my '97 ext. cab 4x4 Chevy w/ 3.73, 5.7, & auto I was able to get anywhere from 17 - 19. With my '99 Silverado equipped the same way except for a 5.3 I'm able to go anywhere from 18 - 20 (21 a couple of times) and yes all were manually calculated. I don't usually complain about the MPG of my Chevies (Silverado & Trailblazer) they are both big vehicles and don't do exceptional, but for what they are I think they do pretty good. But at the same time I use our Honda Accord as my commuter vehicle (54 miles each way) as it gets between 30 & 33 MPG. Plus it is a lot cheaper vehicle to replace than either the Silverado or the Trailblazer.

I found it strange last week when I decided to fill up the kerosene tanks (for heating this winter) that K1 was still 1.99 per gallon, same as last March.

Diesel was 2.47, Gasoline was 2.55.

I asked the attendent about it and he said it will be going up soon.
