I see someone mentioned something about Johanesburg South Africa. Although South Africa is a amazing country Johanesburg is very dangerous ! The thiefs there will kill you for nothing. I go every year on business and will be going in a few months. You never walk the streets and always carry a gun

20+years ago radios were being stolen up and down my buddies road. His dad said, I'd solder fish hooks to the radio. You would never believe what he caught at 3am with those treble hooks. I saw the blood in the car and his wife backed up his story.

I'd be tempted to buy a seat cover and prepare it well... just never USE it.

Many moons ago, I used to keep a spare key in my ash tray of the car (never used for ashes). I usually didn't lock the car doors at home either. Anyway, one day thieves broke in and stole my key, and left the car!!!!!!

I still don't lock the car, but no more spare keys in the ashtray.

Probably throughout my life, I've had a bit over $1000 worth of mostly tools stolen. The worst is to loose a toolbox, and never know exactly which tools were in it, so one never knows when a particular tool is misplaced, or stolen.

However, I wonder how much of my tax money is going to support the police, judiciary system, and prison system. I have to believe that the government is taking far more money than is justified by my losses.

My service van has been broken into several times... very frustrating because there is always a window to replace in addition to what was stolen...

No particular pattern other than most of the time it has been picking up supplies...

Once was Sunday noon parked at the first space across from the entrance of Home Depot...

Always have an alarm... not a deterrent. Having to chain down equipment works better.

Another time I was loading the truck about 20 feet from the front door at the house I was working at all day... across the street there were several young men drinking on the front porch... only out of site from the truck for a minute...

Of course no one saw anything and when pressed laughed about it... it would have been impossible for them to not have seen what happened.... glass was all over the street.

Some of the contractors I know can only work by having a dog with them to watch the truck... amazing... a hundred people can walk by and the dog is silent... stop walking and motion towards the truck and the dog goes ballistic.

I've personally been told by police if someone breaks in and u catch them. Dont just beat em up.Kill em. Dead men tell no tales. Self defence is a wide open platform. You can tell any story you want and the thief can't argue or sue you. Also locks only keep out honest people. If someone wants in bad enough they will get in. Hook up a 12 volt battery to an electric fencer to the door handle and window frame if its metal. Some fencers are pretty nasty and a rooftop solar panel can charge it but still be too hard to steal. Just a thought not sure if it would work but it would be funny.

A couple of years ago, on another forum, a buddy was telling about recording a large, mad Rottweiler for a few minutes then setting up the recording on a loop. He put the player, amp and speakers in his shop to be triggered by sensors in the doors (no windows in the shop). He said a few weeks later he heard the alarm trip in the night and looked out the window to see a pickup taillights hi-tailing down the country lane he lived on.

I thought this was a good idea until someone pointed out that if the thief got hurt running away you could be sued for endangerment.

So if you had a real dog there barking, that wouldn't be endangerment???? If a real dog *IS*also endangerment, then how could anyone have a guard dog? Jerk's already trespassing with intent to commit further crime.
Having said that, our laws are already screwed up enough that I wouldn't at all be surprised if that was the truth.
