I have need for a farm diesel tank. ? Obround tank for outside farm fuel storage?

My pump came with an extendable metal sleeve tube for various depth tanks. I set mine for about 4-5" off the bottom.
My tank is also tilted. the drain side is about 1 1/2" lower. All 4 legs are sitting on 2x6 P.T. board and the fill side is setting on a second 2x6.

^^ That sounds about right ^^

About the base. Keep in mind that a full 275 gal tank of diesel weighs about a ton!

If you have a welder, it's not a bad idea to weld a sled on it: a piece angle iron welded to/connecting two legs on each of the long sides, then cross braces between them. You don't want the legs to splay

Absolutely necessary? Well, I wouldn't spend a bunch on it, you can do the same with wood, but figure you probably have some stuff laying around, too.

I've thought a lot about that, and that is the plan. The guy who does the sandblasting also is a welder, so that works out perfectly. I think I'll even ask him to build in a slight angle, so the bottom will remain flat but the tank will have a slight tilt to the drain. How much front to back drop do you think is enough? Hmmm... now that I think of it, I don't remember where the drain is, in relation to where I was going to put the pump. I wonder how hard it would be to have the welder put another hole at the opposite side of the tank from the drain... or vice versa... put in a drain in the opposite side. Any ideas about cost? Putting it in a 275 Obround (heating oil) tank.

Many (most?) welders won't cut or weld directly on a tank that had fuel in it- without a lot of cleaning or filling with water. Diesel if better than gas, but still...

My 600 round tank is on a set of skids that angle up in the front with a bar between them that can be used to tow it around with, too. Something to think about if you ever have to move it.

At a scrapyard two pieces of angle about 7' long would be $.35/lb. I don't know, maybe $10 with the cross braces unless you went wild. What your welder will charge? No idea.

I wouldn't bother trying to weld in a tilt. Just dump a bucket of gravel before placing your tank and rake it with about 1/8"-1/4" per foot should be fine. That's enough for water drains and sewage, should be fine for standing fuel ;)

Here's my 300 gallon elevated gravity tank.

I'm planning on ultimately putting these on a small concrete pad. If I don't do it now... I'll be shimming then. And worse yet... I've thought about it, so I'll be pissed at myself... and I'm too nice of a guy to be p.o.'d at.

New issue...

I need to clean and refurbish the threads on a diesel tank. There are 6 total holes needing cleaned mainly of rust etc.

I've tried a wire brush to no avail. Only thing I can think of is a tap... but the only taps I can find are online and for sale. While I don't believe anyone should forgo payment for their wares, I just can't stomach a $150 tap to clean out 6 holes. A literal 5 minute job.

Any thoughts? I've thought about getting a 2" nipple, cutting grooves vertically along the threads and using it... but I have no idea whether that will work at all. The metals are going to be roughly the same hardness... maybe even softer than the tank, with galvanized 2" pipe.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find a rental. Even Harbor Freight doesn't have one, at least that I can find. The cheapest I can find on Amazon is $88 and they are back-ordered for 2 months.

My goal is quick... I was going to take the tanks to a sandblaster/welder tomorrow evening and have him clean them up. I was removing old fittings this evening, and while there are a couple I can't remove, there are also a few that are acting almost 'cross-threaded' because the threads are so bad.

Grooves in a nipple or plug will work to clean threads.

Brilliant!

My $2 - 2" thread cleaner...

The one on the right was my first try... I didn't think about the direction of threads compared to the 'cutting side'. As soon as I set it on the hole, I knew that wouldn't work. I immediately grabbed another plug and flipped it before the grinder.
