Just to be clear DD... Amazon.com: GOLDENROD 496-3/4 WATER-BLOCK FILTER (56591) Bowl Fuel Tank Filter with 3/4" NPT Top Cap: Automotive is not enough of a filter? I need another for sediment etc? If so, is it Pump->Sediment filter->Goldenrod water filter?

Actually, according to the questions and answers on Amazon, the consensus seems to be that it will remove both water and sediment.

TSC sells this same filter and it is a 17 micron filter. I follow it with a Farm Filter that is 10 micron and use a hand pump. Seems to work well. 0920161329.jpg

Since I need to replace my fuel hose with something better, seems like a good time to add
a second filter. Basically a choice of spin on or Goldenrod style visible insides. Is being able to see inside
a benefit?
Spin on is clearly convenient. I like your setup Steve.

All this fuel is also going to go through two separate fuel filters on the tractor. (only one on my JD X750 which reminds me to change it)
On the Massey, one is sediment, one is water, just changed them. With drains on the bottom of each.
Embarrassed to report I don't remember what the Kubota has.
It goes into the dealer every two years for a full service.

So if that piece of grit gets through four filters, I'm going to be really surprised. ;)

It would be nice if they made a filter that stopped fuel flow if it detected excessive water, so many ppm.
Of course a bypass secondary would sure be a good idea with that.

Is there something wrong with the 8 GPM Roughneck 12V pump I posted a while ago? I have not read any bad reviews. I've been using mine for over a year now and it cost less than $160 at NorthernTool. I don't lock mine but could easily lock the nozzle to the hanger bracket with the right size padlock to prevent unauthorized use. Even if someone went to use it they would have to have the matching 12V plug or hot wire the plug to pump it.

I don't need an automatic nozzle as it only takes a minute or so to fill my 12 gallon tractor tank.

You guys do have me thinking of adding a water block filter after my 10 micron NAPA Gold even though I haven't had a water in fuel problem. I also stick my tank once a month for water and haven't had any yet.

George,

No, there is nothing wrong with the 8pgm pump.

Everything I do right now, is planning for the next 30 years, with not only me... but with my family, potential hires, etc etc etc.

I am doing everything I can to minimize the possibility of brainless screwups. I am also doing everything I can in order to design and build my property so that I can take care of as much as possible, when I am 80 years old. But... I know the reality is that I will have a son, grandchild, help, etc on the property and there is a likelihood that they will need fuel. I'd hate to have to pay down the road, because I didn't take the time now.

Buying an automatic diesel nozzle seems ridiculous, I know. I used a straight end valveless 'nozzle' my entire life, but it was on a manual pump. If I was the only one doing it, I wouldn't have an issue, but... I hate more than anything... seeing the future, and paying the price of ignoring it. Its just my thing... my quirk... my bane. But... I've grown to pay attention to it.

So...

So...

Proper education, training, and labeling of tanks and pumps will go a long way. I can't blame you on taking precautions now to prevent future screwups. Keep us informed on what solutions you come up with.

According to the link I posted from TSC, the goldenrod filters are 3 microns. That being said, however, it's important to understand the "micron games" mfrs play. Absolute ratings, fudged ratings, etc. I'm working up a bypass oil filter for my Excursion and one has to be Sherlock to find out the real data ;)

Did you find info to contradict the posted ratings? Wouldn't surprise me, but please share the link ;)

Water blocking filters are *supposed* to stop the fuel flow once they've saturated with water. But...I've found that if left too long or if it gets too much water all at once, the filter can break up or fail and allow water and previously-filtered junk to pass

In a clear filter with drain on the bottom, you can see how much stuff is accumulating, drain any incidental water, inspect anything that looks unusual, etc. You can tell a lot by running the filtered-out stuff into your hand and looking at it and feeling it while you rub it around.

I'll take a pic of the filter setup I have today...

Dadnatron- When thinking about non-diesel cars and such, remember: You CANNOT run offroad in onroad vehicles. Getting caught- especially with as many fillups you are planning- could result in big fines. You could always use a piece of wire to fasten a tag or sign to the nozzle, "OFF ROAD DIESEL"

I like the idea of cable wrapped through the nozzle handle and around the pump and then padlocked. Like the old service stations used to do at night.

Oh, something I forgot to mention....

When installing your pump into the tank, adjust or cut the pickup pipe so that it is a few inches off the bottom. Yeah, you lose some capacity, but the majority of "bad things" lurk at the bottom ;) Hence the bottom drain (that I wish I had)

Good luck with your choices! Sounds like you are getting some good suggestions and have some decent options now :drink:

The 496-5 replacement filter link you posted does say 3 micron but the entire filter assy with housing #496 that uses the 496 filter says it is a 17 micron filter. I can only assume a 496-5 filter is a replacement for a 496 filter and is 3 micron.
Dutton-Lainson Goldenrod 496 Water-Block Absorbing Fuel Filter - For Life Out Here

They also offer a #495 filter assy that is rated at 10 microns in the detail of product but says 4 micron in the specification of product so there is some confusion here what micron rating you are really getting.

There is way more to filters than just a micron rating.

Things like beta ratio and efficiency.

the filter in question can, and may be both a 3 micron and 17 micron filter at the same time.

Some common beta #'s I see for other types of filters are b1000 and b20

b1000 means the filter will stop 99.9% of particles above its b1000 micron rating.
b20 is 95%.

So the filter in question, could hypothetically have a b1000 micron rating of 17 and a b20 rating of 3 micron.

So in laymans terms, what that means is........

Filter will stop 99.9 % of particles over 17 micron
AND 95% of particles down to 3 microns.

Again, there is way more to a filter than a simple micron rating. A good (low) micron rating at a low beta value may not be as good of a filter as one with a higher micron rating at a much higher beta

Who knows, LOL. Absolute, nominal, beta, etc. All ways to "not say" the truth, IMHO.

Just for info, here's a thread about oil filters and ratings. Not related to diesel filters, but in a few mins you can get a feel for the "micron ratings game"

Oil filter micron rating | Engine Oil Filters | Bob Is The Oil Guy

I was under the "impression" that the particle filter was 10 microns and the waterblock was 3 microns.

Actually, what they potentially are, are ways to actually state the truth more precisely ... ;)

How far should the fuel pick up be off the bottom? I would imagine a few inches to keep from picking up water and sludge accumulation. I am planning on having the the pump and bottom drain on opposite sides and tilt the tank towards the drain.

I think I might need a few more inches of length in the pick up though. Thoughts?
