Define "old". My 01's still going strong, you see a lot of 2nd gen ('96-04) around. 3rd gen, not so much...Daimler really screwed that one up.
Other than maybe Rangers, more than any other less-than-fullsize trucks. Pretty rare to see an S-10 or Japanese trucks that old.

Must be regional, I see a lot of S10's in MO. when I go there, and My Dad drives one. See a few in OK as well and some in here in Texas, don't see many Dakota's though.

First gen specifically from the late 80s to mid 90s the Dakota was a innovative design in the fact it was bigger than a true compact but smaller than a fullsize. Eventually all "compact" trucks followed what dodge did years before. I'm a compact Toyota Tacoma and pre Taco guy if it wasn't for Toyota buying back all the perforated boxed frames there would be a lot more tacos on the road imo.

Been owing and driving pickups since 1970, only ever had RWD trucks. Never been stuck, never needed 4WD. If the roads are too bad for my truck, I stay home until the county gets them plowed out. I do add some weight in the bed in the winter, usually 5-600 lbs of bagged sand or lumber.

When I worked at the airport late 70's through 86 I had a snowmobile for days when the '70 Nova or parent's VW bus wouldn't make it. VW bus is great in snow. Then I bought a 71 Landcruiser and ditched the snowmobile. Then got an 85 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4. Then a '93 Suburban. Now the 2003 Suburban.

My jobs at the airport and the newspaper required me to be able to get to work in any weather. 2wd just won't do it sometimes. My current job is not mission critical, so I could stay home if I had to. But I like being "the guy" that they can count on to make it in... also pays O.T. on snow days.

That’s what my dad did. The problem he ran into is it took up bed space for the tools or materials for the days work, and the traction weight got in the way of what you really needed to carry (may not be a problem for you). Once he got his first 4wd in mid 70’s, he never looked back and enjoyed having his truck bed fully usable.
I think times have changed. 4wd is so commonplace now, practically every vehicle has it. Its not the exotic, special thing it used to be. It’s like you have to ask NOT to have 4wd.

No reason to ever own a truck that's not 4WD. Price difference is not that much anymore, nor is gas mileage. You get stuck once and it's worth it....Plus you lose the ability to ever go to the really cool places where normal people can't get to....

I had a 2007? Dodge Dakota 2WD with a locked rear. Standard v/6.
Had no issues on a slick boat launch, in winter I put a section of telephone pole behind rear wheels, studded snows. Had no issues getting where I needed to go. Never tried in anything above about 8" of snow.
For my use, it did fine. I do know we used to go off roading in my 73 bronco, mud plains, in 2WD and didn't get stuck as often as you would think. Always went with friends...
