I have to become the expert at everything

The money I have saved doing it myself has more than payed for the extra tools I needed to get the job done. Then I always have the tools for something else!

That's what I do when ever possible and I'm not stuck with a lazy streak. I'd always rather put the money into tools required to get something done than pay some numbskull to screw things up and do it halfa$$ed if at all.
I'm always left wondering what all these licenses for this and that are for. I also wonder about the agencies granting all of these licenses and wonder if they really know anything. So called inspectors are another one. I've seen stuff signed off by building inspectors in this house that I would never have let get by. Just another breed of morons with their hands out.

AMEN!!! I have had 2 different roofing contractors up to "repair" the leaks on my old metal roof barn.....it has only made the problem worse. I will have to go up there myself which sucks! because im not a fan of heights.
You gotta do what you gotta do!!

I convinced my wife years ago that tools are actually cost nothing in the long run. Guess that's how I've ended up with a full woodworking, good metal working and mechanics shop. NOTHING ever gets sub'ed out around here.

If you do it right, you can finagle the wife into buying tools for you. For example, my wife wanted a Pergo floor in our last house. After pricing out the materials and labor, I told her that if she got me the sliding compound miter saw I wanted, I'd do the floor and we could save the labor cost. I still have the saw and use it too. She has bought me a lot of tools over the years. Couldn't quite swing the tractor though, I had to buy that myself.

With a lot of things... seems if you can use it 2 or 3 times it's paid for.

This is how I rationalized buying the D3 Dozer.

I had estimates to put in the required fire-trail and it was more than than I paid.

So I looked into renting and day rate was not that bad... transport was equal to the day rate and then to be efficient... I need to be flexible as to when it happens.... soil moisture content... etc...

No wonder you have a successful business career.... the are of negotiation.

My latest gripe is house inspectors who compile lists of nonsense but miss the important stuff. Been in the house awhile and now get into the corner of the attic and find bath fans that don't vent outside. Add more to the list of things that need to be done. I wish I could do more but have never been mechanically gifted like some so I need to know my limits. Today contracted to get a chimney installed, let someone who is used to doing that take care of it.

I have already become the expert at everything. Problem now is I am too old to do most everything. :banghead:

"I'm just tired of having to become an expert at everyones jobs before I hire them to make sure they know what they are doing. Dang."

You really hit that on the head, not a propane example, but I struggle with this exact thing every day in the working world involving at least 80% of the people I encounter, including high paid experts, from huge many-billion organizations in the technology world with names you would recognize. Sure makes everything more difficult.
