With a lot of things... seems if you can use it 2 or 3 times it's paid for.

This is how I rationalized buying the D3 Dozer.

I had estimates to put in the required fire-trail and it was more than than I paid.

So I looked into renting and day rate was not that bad... transport was equal to the day rate and then to be efficient... I need to be flexible as to when it happens.... soil moisture content... etc...
You bought a D3 and were able to rationalize it to SHMBO? I do believe I have a new hero...but back to the point...so much of our stuff now is meant to be replaced rather than repaired and the techs are trained accordingly...that's all they know. I've found that to be true on autos, appliances and a host of other things.

I have already become the expert at everything. Problem now is I am too old to do most everything. :banghead:

I never missed a beat... that is until Doc said the pain in my right hand is arthritis... it has made painful things that I never would have thought twice about.

Too soon old and too late smart!

I hear that both of my shoulders have bad rotor cuffs and boy does that suck. I have always done almost everything and can't think how much we have saved over the years, but nature is closing in on what I can do. So we have to deal with Idiots.

My latest gripe is house inspectors who compile lists of nonsense but miss the important stuff. Been in the house awhile and now get into the corner of the attic and find bath fans that don't vent outside. Add more to the list of things that need to be done. I wish I could do more but have never been mechanically gifted like some so I need to know my limits. Today contracted to get a chimney installed, let someone who is used to doing that take care of it.
When I built here my inspector (who I learned to like, respect and appreciate...shoot sometimes he would sit out on the porch and drink a beer while we talked over things) paid very close attention to the important things...yeah we ran into a lot of "medium" things where we agreed it was stupid but it was code and had to be done...the "little stuff"...at the end he said he thought I knew what I was doing and signed off so we could get the occupancy permit. Our township could not justify it's own inspector (many properties would probably be condemned) so they hired out to an engineering firm.

Your knowledge is not wasted...in my case for years I have supported a wife and kids that will do the work while I "advise". My wife is probably the best contractor I have ever known but I was smart...she found a house plan she wanted so I have always been able to say it is her house! Recently her 86 yo mother bought a house not far from here that needed a lot of work...I did a lot there (plumbing, flooring, electrical, doors, trim etc.) but when I get the "list" now I merely tell my wife that she and her mother bought a house that I would not have...problem solved...

If you do it right, you can finagle the wife into buying tools for you. For example, my wife wanted a Pergo floor in our last house. After pricing out the materials and labor, I told her that if she got me the sliding compound miter saw I wanted, I'd do the floor and we could save the labor cost. I still have the saw and use it too. She has bought me a lot of tools over the years. Couldn't quite swing the tractor though, I had to buy that myself.

This is how we roll also... wife is very supportive. We decide if we need a limited usage tool (source it from harbor freight) or a long term, need it to last tool (source higher end tools). With the internet searches, we can figure out many things that we know nothing about previously.

I'm a General Contractor. My job is hiring subs, it's always a crap shoot, and I don't hire the cheap ones, I try to get the best at a better price. Even then it sometimes goes south, it's the way things are now. The old timer who was the very best at his craft is gone. Elvis has left the building

And the more I read in this thread the more nodding my head is doing.... I agree with basically everything written here!
