I agree. After I wash my hands I use the paper towel to dry them and then use it to open the door. I throw it away in the trashcan that is just about always outside the door. If there are no paper towels, I kick the door at the bottom real hard and it almost always pops open enough to wedge my toe between the door and the jam and I open it with my shoe. I also carry two toilet flushers with me at all times... my shoes! I never touch the flush lever!!! :D

Well, I guess I have pretty much figured out who on this thread will shake my hand, especially If Ive been up the road shaking hands with the farmer  :)

Even though I started the bathroom side of this conversation, I still shake your hand Scott. :D Unless I see you walking out of the bathroom!:):):):)

I have been in some very nice Porta Potties lately. They actually have a sink and hand cleaner. :D

Shaking hands does not bother me that much but going to the grocery store does during flu season. My kids bring home stuff from school all of the time and I'm sick of them/us being sick. My kids both just got over pnuemonia brought home from school. We found out later that half of one class of 36 kids had pnuemonia. My wife had it earlier this year that required multiple visits to the doc and even one trip to the ER. Not Fun.

When I was in high school we had a set of WW2 books, really a pictorial history.
One of the pictures showed a Japanese soldier returning home. When he met his wife the soldier bowed. The clip underneath it said, "no vulgar western style kissing, just a polite little oriental bow." I have often wondered if by chance they had learned that some diseases could be prevented by this??? I think that makes better sense that bumping elbows. Since I am not an expert on the Asian cultures I don't know. LOL

I'm sure you guys already know this but you can carry Purell in your pocket (Go Jo) and wash without water or towels anywhere.

My ophthalmologist has it in all his offices and swears by it.

Purell kills 99.99% of most common germs in as little as 15 seconds without water or towels. Specially formulated moisturizers leave hand feeling soft and refreshed even after repeated use. Dermatologist tested. Dye-free

In that case I think it was more a matter of Japanese society frowning on public displays of physical affection.

As I understand it, the human body needs to be sick to build immunity, but it also is specific. Having the flu repeatedly will most likley not protect you from getting chicken pox and vis versa. Once you have had chicken pox though, the chance of you contracting it again is almost non existent. Even having dealt with one type of flu, your immune system may not necessarilly protect you from a different strain of flu.

I believe the human body was meant to get sick. By preventing all the minor illnesses you are denying the bodys immune system the chance to adapt to changes in types of sickness going around thus setting yourself up for a massive illness that your immune system is totally unprepared to combat. Unfortunatly since viruses mutate thru their environment, our ability to quickly travel the world does the same thing in providing us access to illness that our body is not familliar with. History has proven this over and over. Columbus discovering the new world and European settlers colonizing the Americas caused massive death rates in the native populations from new illnesses untill their immune systems adapted. Any guesses to the biggest killer during the first world war? If I recall my history correctly, it wasn't combat...

Ron, it was influenza. It killed millions. I have some old postcards, years ago I collected them, and some of them mention about local people who died from the flu. And, I think your right on a whole lot of what you said. I was jesting more than anything in my other post. I have no real qualms about shaking hands. But bumping elbows would be awkward to me.

You will find more than just germs. During some of my law enforcement training, we were introduced to a device called an Ion Scan. One of the instructors asked for a $20 dollar bill from one of the students. Using a round paper collection swab, he rubbed the bill and placed the sample swab into the machine. The swab tested positive for cocaine. The instructor then told us all to stop looking strangely at the individual who provided the $20 as it had nothing to do with him. There are very few $20 dollar bills in circulation that have not been in close proximity at some point in time to drugs or a drug transaction.

Actually throughout history the biggest killer in war has been illness not combat. What killed? Poor food, lack there of, exposure as well as lack of sanitation, i.e, not being able to wash you hand....

Even in WWII and Korea rations where barely adequate but they where orders of magnituded better than what was used in the past.

Vietnam was the first US war that had more combat deaths than deaths caused by sickness.

I'm not worried about the bird flu at this time. It could be years away. Sounds like if it happens though it will be a real PITA for all of us.

Not worried about getting the flu from Bird either, lol! My students are another story... don't think I've ever had a year of teaching yet that I didn't get it. Allergic to the flu shot:(

And, yes, I shake everyone's hand in case you were wondering. I have horses, so if you are at my house it's possible I also have you know what on my hands. Soap and running water are one of humankind's greatest inventions.
