i have rear wheel weights, is that not good enough?

Once I was trying to lift a small log up my bank with just a box blade on the back. I was surprised how quickly things felt wrong and I felt a little sick. Instead of the ballast box I had put the $180 toward a box blade. Soon after I had my tires loaded with RV anti-freeze and invested in four 42lb suitcase weights to hang on the box blade. I leave the weights on the box blade all the time. I can also set sandbags on the box blade heavy work. Things feel much better now. When I mow my pasture I take off the loader and hang the weights on the front.

There are several ways to add ballast, figure out the combination you want. The important thing is that you do it. That is some of the best advice I've gotten on this site. So I'll pass it on to you.

my 4310 has loaded tires, and a box blade for ballast, which was enough. the 2305 i opted to not load the tires because it is very wet in washington, and i mow my lawn w/ it "see scary incident above" so i got a ballast box because of no need for a box blade at my home. i filled it with chip seal so i could remove the weight if needed. it weighs about 750lbs. that tiny tractor can pick up anything with that box on the back, plus it is super stable. loaded tires are not enough! they are so small you may only get 80 to 100lbs. per wheel. i recommend getting a ballast box or box blade and hang some added weight on it, plus a box blade doesn't seem heavy enough to to scrape hardpan and hardened gravel driveways w/out added weight anyways

Hey Stuarth... You really do want to run more weight on your tractor than the wheel weights... even just moving snow. The JD manual recommends filled tires, one weight on each wheel AND 772lbs of rear ballast. Seems like a lot but these little machines get tippy in a hurry without proper ballast. I would get as close to the recommended amounts as possible... Now get that bucket cleaned up... it's too dirty :D

My 2320 seems fine with just the BH and FEL on it. Things don't get scary even with a full bucket. Next spring when I cut the fields I'll run loaded tires and a BB. I'll probably keep the BH on with the blower this winter. That bugger takes up a lot of room once it's off the tractor.

You mentioned you have wheel weights on. I bought a box blade in addition to the FEL. My dealer said the BB would be enough for ballast. On more than one occasion I would lift a rear wheel. Like FortClatsop I loaded my tires and invested in the suitcase weights to hang on the BB when using the FEL, and then use them on the front when it was off. It is a different machine! Much more stable, and the traction is great. I don't need 4x4 nearly as often, and the rear wheels do not leave the ground.

I ordered the 54 inch blade/hitch and a collection system and I have two more weeks to wait for them. In the summer I understand that the catcher is a real pain to remove/install so I think I will be forced to use the whell weights and the catcher. I could sure use the collection system today, the weather is in the 50's and I have feet of leaves to pick up. Anyways I picked up my brothers blower and took care of them today.

Nothing beats a Backhoe for rear weight I guess - at 800+ lbs for the 46BH that should help a bunch....filling the tires on the 2320 will get you probably 300 lbs per wheel. It will really show when you use the FEL on heavy lifts

You will like the 54 blade a lot! Get a rubber squeegee cutting edge for it. The rubber won't dig in to the lawn when you push your banks back. If you have a stone drive, it will not dig in and if you have blacktop, it wont scrape and scratch. Enjoy!

I received the blade and MCS system this week and so far I installed the collection system and as far as the fit and ease of taking it off and on I am not real happy. I also went and purchased the independent lift today because it will make it a little better changing over from bagger to thre-point impliments and I am also not real happy about te independent lift because of the hose routing. I have not had time to install the blade yet but I think that will fit good and install easy from what I have seen so far by opening the boxes. I included some pictures of the fit issues.
