Another vote for grease here. Cheap, readily available, and zero rust. But no harm in using a cover unless the shaft is not greased in which case it will rust.

I keep mine lubed and capped. My implement end gets a dose of fluid film.

My Deere has a nice steel cap that clips in place. It's usually on. I don't use the PTO all that much, and since I DO grease it - it would collect all sorts of dust/dirt. I like the $9 one...

This. It can be a real struggle to put these together or get them apart. Any small extra that makes it easier is a good idea.

You could also use a piece of foam pipe insulation.

My mid- PTO is rarely used, so that cap is on most of the time and the stub is greased. If the rear stub is going to be open for a while (like winter when I keep the rear blade on for snow duty) then the rear stub gets lubed and covered.

Even in 2007 the JD PTO guards were $15 apiece.

I took mine off when I got the tractor and figured it was basically like the film that's all over brand new products, remove this before using. If I recall, it's up on top of my tractor stuff cabinet still... and did it have screws that kept it on?

Are there any caps that have a spring thing like a pto shaft coupler does to pop on and stay on the stub?

The hard plastic covers on my JD have holes and slots cut into the base plate that mate up to round "buttons" that protrude from the casting around the PTO stub. You push the base of the cover over the buttons and turn to lock them in place.

Is this what you're looking for? These say they're caps for Kubota . . . but since the shafts are all uniform in size, wouldn't these work?

I'm sure you'll grease it up good before the cap goes on.

A day late for me... I just spent the $11 for one from Kubota. The $5 one would work just as well.

I like to spray it with fluid film, I have found the tight rubber sleeves just hold moisture for some reason.
