What would a chicken do if there were floodlights at night so it could see the mice? Or does that interrupt the laying cycle?
During the winter, when the temps are in the teens at night, we turn on heat lamps inside the coop, which has no affect on their sleep. Same thing with baby chicks. We pull the chicks from the next as soon as they hatch, dip their beaks in water and then keep them in a cage with a heat lamp in the corner keeping it 90 degrees. They live like this for about two months, or until their feathers come in. That light is on 24/7 and they all go to sleep at the same time.
Once asleep, they are worthless. Totally unable to protect themselves, or even react to a threat. That's when we catch them, move them around, and introduce new birds.
