Welcome to TBN :D! We really like to spend other members money as well as provide advise. I agree with MossRoad about mowing that 45 degree slope. I go into "pucker  mode" whenever I am around 15 degrees of tilt. I really am really, really careful and moving slow when mowing across slope. It does not take much to roll a SCUT or CUT. Scott VT is right about researching tractors. Many of the more established tractor brand websites have tractor selector programs that will help you find the right size tractor based on your input. I believe they are heavily "weighted" by FEL data. Good luck on your research and search :)! Jay

Welcome to TBN Bob. I live just east of Harrisburg so its good to have another PA guy here.

Yes welcome, there are lots of Pa guys who post on this site. Seems like a 20 to 25 hp tractor would meet your needs and then some. Don't be afraid to look at the Korean tractors, they are solid and dependable with lots of features and usually are offered at reasonable prices. Good Luck.

Welcome too
I'm in Limerick and Waterville

I have a bx23 and 45* is steep unless you could only go up and down!

for that I would use a weed blade on trimmer or a walk behind cutter

Mowing 45 degree slopes raises the red flag. That is steep and not many compact tractors will do it. You may want to consider plantings with ground cover so you do not have to mow. Otherwise, you may end up getting into specialized, expensive equipment to mow that small but steep area.

Unless you have a Power Trac 1850. They are designed to mow 45 degree slopes safely.

The slope mowing is the red flag. I think the only safe way to mow that with a tractor would be with a sicklebar mower, letting you drive at the top of the area with the mower angled down. Even then there is some danger. I would agree with the suggestion to plant something there that doesn't need mowing.

All the major brands are good. My two cents - (1) don't assume that Deere is more expensive, go check what your local JD dealer wants for the model that suits you; (2) look at all the brands sold within a reasonable distance before you make a decision, but skip any brands that are too far a drive to be practical for service and parts (in my area, Mahindra and Massey-Ferguson were too far away to be worth bothering to look at, and Kioti was right on the edge); and (3) Kioti makes good stuff at good prices, definitely look at them before you buy. If I had had more than one Kioti dealer within 90 miles, and if that one dealer had been less than 45 miles away and had more inventory, I might well have gone that other-orange route.

I'm new here - 1st thread - 1st post - been lurking - very confused, except I do know ya'll can help me spend on a tractor:D :D .

I'm buying a 2.4 acre piece of sloped old farmland property and will have to mow an additional 0.8 acre "dry" retention pond with as much as 45deg slopes. I will also be building a shed with slab and "farming" 1/2 acre (did this as a kid but with hand tools - too old for that now).

Being a "Hogg" I want a CUT (or SCUT) with a mmm & FEL to start and will be adding a tiller, blade and backhoe later, maybe more later.

I have red, orange, yellow & green within 20 miles of new house and lot.

I'd perfer to pay cash and not finance:mad: so i'll need to purchase stuff as I save.

What suprised me is SO approves of purchase:).

I do have time since it won't happen until early july.

thank you for haelping me.

I assume you're interested in a new tractor, not a used one.
I have 10 acres of flat pasture land that I take care of with a new 21-hp(engine) Kubota B7510HST/LA302 FEL. It's a CUT with 4WD and a hydrostatic transmission. Cost $12,600 plus tax in May 2005 and 10% down, 0% financing for 36 months.

The 7510 has a second PTO shaft to handle a MMM, which I didn't buy. Instead I have a $600 King Kutter rotary mower (brush hog, 4-ft cut width) for the weeds and a $1000 Huskee riding mower (18-hp engine) to mow the lawn and a small almond orchard.

To cut the grass on your pond embankments, get yourself a sickle bar mower. Used they cost a few hundred bucks. Don't try to mow on a 45-deg slope with any CUT. Way too dangerous.

Check out the Kubota B3030. I think it is the best "hobby farrmer" tractor out there. Compact and strong. It also has a mid pto for a MMM.

Happy Shopping

Any plans on a cow or 2, or some sheep. Maybe fence off the hilly part and put animals there to keep it mowed.

Young man to old rancher: How many cows can I put on my 4 acres?
Rancher: How high do you want to stack them?

welcome to tbn !!
i live on 2 acres and its all on some sort of slope, I bought a bx23 and it has been wonderful. Gets in tight places, digs like a champ and runs strong. I think no bigger lot than you have a bx would be great for your situation, true it may not be the fastest thing to do everyjob but it will do most of them at a reasonbale price, about 16000 down here with mower for the bx24.
good luck, read all you want we will make more

Thank you all for the input it's been very helpful.

MossRoad - I think I will take your suggestion and plant ground cover. Though it would take away from To(y)ol :D time, I don't want to be a crush statistic. thanks

I've done some power reading on this site and others - still confused but more informed:confused:

Time to visit dealers, look at & drive tractors, and get prices.
