IIRC some injectors are tested by raising a pressure (high, btw .. bench test) to a pressure threshold above which they'd 'pop open', and apparently at the right time as designed. Adjustment is by shimming a spring and re-testing. Not that a Kubo's are similar, or that checking them thus would be any shortcut to finding the problem, but the symptoms still don't add up to me. :mur:

So, if one injector is acting up can its individual timing then be off by firing early or late? (factory defect, early demise) Power isn't too shy of spec (not -10%) but I might expect smoking from a cylinder that shot more or shot out of sync. Could any cylinder(s) be smoking because it/they are carrying others? I know these ideas are kinda 'out there' but balance shaft or no I'd think vibration would be amplified if so, and shouldn't o'all timing only affect o'all power? (Seems retarding can up the oomph & advancing trades that for economy.) What's all that shake & smoke about?? Smoothest runners I've seen have smoked the least, too.

Fred, that any of us wouldn't go ahead with the turbo means zilch with your obvious potential and the support available here if you need it. Can't wait to hear more.

I say go for it, your in the repair business you know what you're doing. I give you credit for trying, If it makes it worse like everyone says or there are problems just take it off and put it back to stock. At least you tried. It's easy for people to say it won't work, that makes me try even harder.
Take plenty of pictures along the way, if nothing else I'll bet it will sound sweet.

Seems it'd be best to fix all the problems with this rig, before modifying?

Never heard anybody complain about lack of power, hard starting, bad vibration, low comp, smoke, flooding, etc. with any new Kubota???

Reading your OP Fred, the rpm dropping to 1500 from 2600 just from using the hydraulics, or slight incline and no load. Man something is very wrong with this rig!!!

I'll admit I like everything I own to work perfectly and strive to make it like that. I should have tried before buying but didn't. I jumped on this because there were no more larger 40 series tractors around, they are gone. Took 2 hours this morning and set up a degree wheel to the front pulley becuae the loader frame covers the timing port in the clutch housing. Sidenote: I would bet real money that no dealers check the timing and tear thse things apart. What a PITA.

Anyway here's my notes from this morning:
12-7-2013

Compression (cranking) 400 psi. all 4 cylinders (factory spec 520-580). WSM discrepancy?
Wrong manual for the tractor? WTFKnows
Checked Snap-On gauge against Nitrogen tank regulator gauge and both match closely.
Fuel Timing check #1 cylinder 17 degrees BTDC.
Leakdown test : #1 cyl. - 2%, #3 cyl.-3%, #4 cyl.-6%, #2 cyl.- 3%. NO leakage through valves.
Valve adjustment varied from .003"(#1 cylinder) to .007" (most others).
Adjusted all valves to .008".
Checked installed camshaft position, with overlap split degree wheel right on TDC #1 cylinder.
All valves checked at .050" lift.
Intake valve opens @13 degrees ATDC. Closes @170 degrees BTDC.
Exhaust valve opens @147 ATDC, Closes at 19 BTDC.
Intake and exhaust valve lift is .305".

Any other things I could check? Fresh out of ideas. Other than the timing being of MAYBE 2 degrees retarded and the tight valve adjustment I see nothing wrong with this. Tractor has 50 odd hours running time. Air filter minder hasn't moved. It just acts like more air is needed.

Thanks, Fred

I don't think we are getting the full story. He said the dealer dynoed it and it made within 5% of advertised power.

Dealer said they dyno every tractor that is sold new.

Wow, you certainly have measured everything I can think of (except the injector spec mentioned just a few appends ago).

I had forgotten about that symptom. What did the dealer say about that? You might here something on a hydraulic with nothing connected, but 1100 rpm drop?

That sounds like a governor issue to me...
