Well, I run several HST and gear from 22 to 85HP and I still don't understand the "problem" nor does Phillip8N who owns the same tractor. I seriously considered a 3940, but decided it would be underpowered for me, so I went bigger.

I'm not saying there isn't a "problem", I just don't understand it yet.
Well, I don't understand HST, so I'll just watch and listen on this one. :D

Fred I think you will be fine- just confirming Kubota's opening point for that intake valve using a confirmed TDC and the degree wheel with a dial indicator on #1 intake valve in the direction of crank rotation...

The fact that your leak down test confirms low leak down- and that the cranking compression is below norms could point to the cam being installed- out of its ""normal installed" position...

OH and next time you do a comp test open the intake manifold up by removing the air cleaner from the system- would hope the air cleaner filter isn't wrapped in plastic or been wet or anything.

I think you will get this figured out- and I also believe something is up with the engine...

The dealer dynoed the tractor and it was fine. I would say the cam timing is fine.

Well having an HST sure ain't helping me, so we'll both be watching and listening.

I don't own a HST and will not own a HST, so this could be why I don't understand Fred's problem, as I've never run out of power with three 24-45 hp Kubota's.

Like you, I never run our L3750 over 1500 rpm and rarely run the L3800 over 2000...

Well written and good explanation, Richard!

Yep Don. HST takes a LOT of power. In an attempt to offer many HP ranges in the same basic model, Kubota has went too far. For most operators they won't know the difference. My Brother included. I've owned both, HST and gear models. My L4400DT was the same basic chassis size as my Brother's L3240. No comparison beyond that. It would do more work at an idle than his does at half throttle.

If you own a L3240HST or L3540HST or even L3940HST and are happy with it's power, I'm happy for you!!! :)

I had an L4300 gear and now have an L3540 HST. My HST tractor has 10 fewer hp, 4wd, and weighs 2,000 lbs more than the gear did, and will spin all 4 tires at 1800 RPM or more. It gets the power to the ground. It will go up my steepest slope at idle. That said, I do notice similar symptoms to what Fred and OVRSZD describe if going uphill kinda fast in M range and operating the loader at the same time. The tractor will not stall, but ground speed slows and the engine loses RPMs. At typically slow working speeds, including loader usage or mowing, the HST has no such symptoms. If I'm trying to race up my hill and operate the loader at the same time, no question the gear was better. For my purposes the heavier HST machine is the hands-down preferred tractor.

I think I'm subscribing at just the right time...

If the dealer did the dyno test as they said, this is more about what a turbo will do for a 3940 than about correcting a problem.

Any chance there's an exhaust restriction? That will do the same thing as starving for air, at least power-wise.

I would increase the timing to at least 21*. Any of these high speed diesels need advanced timing because they have no mechanical advance. I guarantee you will notice a huge increase in performance. 17* is very retarded for this style engine.

He said they did. I'm not sure why this was not mentioned in his first thread.
