No kidding that would drive me crazy when i was working retail. Every couple of hours gone for 15mins on a smoke break, those who dont smoke are left covering the counter.

I know that internet and cell phones can be a big problem, but what about the smoke breaks...?

Most companies limit breaks to specified times and durations.

Agree with RoyJackson, and smoke breaks, cell use, the I am in the restroom excuse etc. should have been explained in the employees handbook given to all prospects and agreed upon before hiring. Also talked about by whom is giving the interview. Employers have to cover themselves from people who want to sue for any given reason, and I try to work with the employees under me to a point. But sometimes it's rediculous.

Our company didn't have any specifics other than smoke breaks were outside. With Michigan winters, it wasn't an issue.

I've employed numerous smokers over the years. The little breaks never really bothered me. At least you KNEW they weren't working. The trouble with email, texting, blogs and twitter etc is that they are doing it at their desks. Its as intrusive as if they are getting a personal visitor every few minutes.

+1

i actually thought of picking up the habit just so id be entitled to all the breaks the smokers seem to get in the run of a day. Not fair to the rest of us non smoking stiffs.

Smoking, water, coffee, bathroom, snack breaks were how people avoided work back in the day. Now it is Facebook, cell phones, IM/texting, shopping, and oh yeah, TBN. :D:D:D:D:D

You know, it could be just as much the employer as the employee. I live in Mississippi, you know the state of low wages. Most employers want a good employee, but they don`t want to pay a good wage. So most of the time you get what you pay for.

That's a result of poor management...managers (or front line supervisors) shouldn't be babysitting their employees, but they should be aware of excessive breaks, etc.
I'm a smoker, myself. I'm a contractor, but I still have to abide by company policy.

If an employer doesn't want employees acesseing the internet, why is it provided. I know the company I worked for allowed acess to all company business, but internet only to the managers. That worked good as it kept the managers busy watching **** so they had less time to harass the employees actually getting the work done.

The manager is gone: Nobody notices!!!!
The janitor is gone: Trash piles up!!!

Make rules and enforce them. Sometimes it might be better to trade a few points off an employees IQ for some ambition.

I agree with a previous poster about getting what you pay for.

Sometimes a good firing is in order.
