Most employers want a good employee, but they don`t want to pay a good wage. So most of the time you get what you pay for.

I would guess most "good employees" would also text message & surf the 'net at least sometimes ... maybe not as much as a "bad employee" ... if there's no firm, enforced rule against it. It's referred to as "pushing the limits". Employer needs to stop the limits from being pushed.

Why aren't employers establishing a "no cell phone" rule? Put a basket on your desk - When employees come in, they gotta put their phone in the basket. Only get it back on breaks, lunch & quittin' time.

As for surfin' the 'net, either install software that controls that the way you want ... or re-arrange all desks so your employee's monitors face where everybody can see them. Or both.

Seems like some of the people here complaining about employees aren't being "boss" enough. You're not trying to be best pals or appease them or give in ... you're trying to make a profit using efficient workers.

on one of my games I have a friend who is on all the time from work. She actually has to take a break from the game because the law says she need a lunch break.

My employer had a pretty strict firewall system set up. Any **** site simply wouldn't be allowed access. And a long list of other thing. Basically CNN, news sites, no game sites. Somehow TBN was allowed!!

One thing I know from working for a huge corporation- in most cases ALL internet use through internal systems is tracked. Sometimes they don't say anything about a valued employee using it, but then when they are looking for a reason to let someone go...well it is one more ding to use when they need/want to.

Im about fed up with cell phones at work. we all have to carry one the drivers and dad and I. We have one employee thats 67 that runs the compactor and he refuses a cell phone. One of our drivers is a pastor and a great guy but every time you see him hes on the phone. At least he hates texting. THe one real thing that irked me with the cell phone was this summer. We were installing a new set of chains one the scrapers elevator. I got he chain started over the drive sprockets and the idlers aligned. I was there with a pry bar and the 67 year old and the pastor. we all had bars prying the chains closer to the master links. About that time his phone rings and he drops te bar and steps to the side o nthe phone leaving us holding the weight. But around the plant we see folks standing in the nooks with a phone in there hand.

We had another employee that was making a good wage that had to be let go because he didnt respect the privelge of using a phone. He would be getting work orders and get a call then turn his back on the boss. THen wandered why after 3 warnings he was let go.

Company I work for uses beep-beep cell phone service, with straight cell as a backup. Since that is an invitation for abuse, they limit our phone usage to 400 minutes, for whatever purpose. So if don't use many for work, we have extra to use for personal. Many of the guys go over regularly and have to pay for the overage. I just use my own for any calls other than the company business. My work actually improves with cell phone usage, as during times when I get bored/tired, I can use my cell to get my brain back into motion with conversations from friends/relatives. I do understand why this would be a problem for most people that have problems with people using cell phones while driving, as I see this problem A LOT!!!! Some people have problems operating a vehicle alone, much less adding a cell phone into the mix.

I do know that even though I can manage a cell phone conversation while driving an 18 wheeler, I cannot do texting or browsing the internet...

Stopping non business computer use was easy for me. On Mac computers I can SHARE the screen of any computer in the company at any time. Big brother at it's best. I can see in real time what people are up to and they know it.

I can even go in and control their computer in real time. Lets say they are on a non business site, I can simply click them out of that sit and shut down their browser, then open up their WORD program and type a small note to them in real time on their desk top. They get the message.

Like I tell them in meetings, no employee has ever in 25 years offered to work a few extra minutes or hours and not get paid for it, so why should I be asked to pay for extra minutes or hours that are non company orientated.

Every minute they spend on the phone costs me a minute of labor.

When I worked at a regular job that required me to work instead of a vehicle, I gave a little more every day, to make up for the time I spent drinking coffee (usually with the boss discussing all sorts of different things). In fact, that was one of the reasons when he installed a time clock after walking out into the shop and me and the shop foreman were the only two not allready washed up and gone at 4:15 when they were paid till 4:30. Time clock was installed that evening with cards for all except me and the foreman.
One day after hours, a good customer called with a rush order that was my responsibility to make. The next morning I came in 10 minutes late and went straight to the kitchen for coffee, where the boss was also at. We sat and talked for about an hour, when he said, "don't you have something to do". I replied with a "not really", and he asked about that rush job that was called in after work the previous day. I told him I picked up the parts from the customer on the way home, did the job at the house while watching TV with the wife, and delivered it on my way in this morning, which was why I was late. Delivery ticket was in the basket on the office managers desk, and knowing her, probably already billed to the customer. A few minutes on a cell phone probably wouldn't be a problem with that boss, as he and I understood we had a job to do, and that is what paid our salary.
