Harv, if you make the tilt point that close to centerline, either you'll have to use very large tires, or a very small box.
Also, tipping that close to the axel, you can probably accomplish the tilt by just using wheel blocks and backing into them.
I've made 2 dumpers from oil tanks, and both will tip 1500# with a flexible V lifting mechanism and a 3000# hand cranked winch. Both have the axel fully to the rear, and use the axel as a tip rather than pivoting the box.

WraughtnHarv...It would be a real hassle to me to have to figure where to set the chains under the tires so that when I backed up to get the tilt started it would be where I wanted the load to be. I sure like the idea of that 'scissor' jack with the 3000# winch.......

how about putting a hub on the rim that would act as a pulley.
It could rap the chain and tires would not slip or bind on the chain.

May I ask, what is wrong with hydraulics?? I built a dump trailer out of an old Ford dump truck that I bought for $500. I just cut the frame about 5' in front of the box and made a hitch. Then I disconnected the truck PTO system and plumbed in two hydraulic lines to the lift cylinder. Now all I have to do is hook up the lines to the tractor remotes and go. When I want to dump, I just push the remote lever to the rear, and up comes the bed. I pull this unit with a JD 3020. Don't have any pic's tonight but can take some and send them if you want. Glad you asked to see. This is actually a single acting cylinder so I have to be very careful on the downstroke so I don't pressure up the back side and blow something up. I am still looking for a double acting cyl that will fit the dimensions for the hoist. Hope these help you out. Hydraman
P.S. I firmly believe that hydraulics are the cheapest and most efficient way to transmit power in many, many applications.

That's a right handy, dandy contraption you got there, Hydraman. Inquiring minds want to know, though. How do you load the dump bed if you are hauling it around behind your tractor/FEL?
