RobertN, I would have to agree with you 110% on your California sentiments. It is indeed a marvelous State. We lived there for a number of years, in the central Valley just south of Sacramento. From that central area, we availed ourselves of a lot that CA has to offer, from San Diego to Fort Bragg. In fact, we bought ourselves a "retirement" parcel in Midpines, some 15 miles from the El Portal entrance to Yosemite (our most favorite place in the USA). It backs up to BLM land with a huge drop to the Merced river, and looks right at Yosemite. One of these days, we'll build something there...
For now, we call NC our home, and we love it here, too. This State has a lot going for it, from mountains in the west, the Blue Ridge Pkwy, the central Piedmont, and of course the ocean coast.

At the risk of getting blasted here, I have observed after living in CA and NC, as well as in the NE (NY, NJ, PA, CT) and the SW (AZ), that folks in NC seem to be more genuinely relaxed, casual and neighborly than anywhere we have ever lived, except perhaps WV which is quite comparable. I'm certain there are many other places for which the same could be said. For us, it has been a refreshing change from the more intense, in-your-face lifestyle.

Isn't freedom grand? Hearty thanks to our forefathers and all those who protect our freedom each and every day, so that we can explore and enjoy this great country.

Robert, do you ski? If so where? Your on the 50 side so my guess is Kirkwood or the old Ranch, Sierra at Tahoe.

TracDoc, have you ever seen the Giant Sequoia's? Also up north in Muir Woods are the giant Redwoods, those trees while not quite as large in diameter are considerably taller. They are unbelieveable. I have hiked much of Yosemite including the 180 mile Tahoe - Yosemite trail. Attached is a picture of a small part of the General Sherman. It's a lousy picture.

Let's turn the tables...
If we could visit only one part of Australia, where should it be, and why? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will need to think about this question overnight.
However one interesting point about my country is that 1/4 of our population live in Sydney, nearly 5 million /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
And maybe Higgy could give his views.

_RaT_,
Lousy? Looks like a great pic to me! Let's see if I can remember w/o looking up our travel stuff... As I recall, we drove northwest to Ukiah (a lovely little town) from Sacto, and then from there drove west to the coast at Mendocino. On the very winding drive, we saw a lot of giant redwoods, but none as large as the Sherman. I think we were on the fringes of the Humboldt Forest. Is that correct? What a spectacular area.

None taken Vin. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Everyone has their own like/dislikes. I personally cannot see the interest in auto racing. Every race is much like every other. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

As far as every golf course being like every other, well, I can only assume that you're not a golfer, so you wouldn't understand the differences. But then again, I wouldn't expect someone not enamored with the sport to even care. And that's O.K.! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You got that right! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I love it as a home base. From here I can go anywhere else to visit.
