Used an electric fan and a 2x4 as a boom mower. (In some small amount of way, you must admit there is a bit of genius in doing that though. It did work).

That is genius, we have an area that is on a steep angle and can't mow, might have to investigate a variation of that.

I have a related project in the works that employs a standard gas push mower (minus handle /W some brackets welded on the deck) in lieu of the genny and fan...
Have seen several variations here in the past...

Will do a search, thanks, road authority cuts it about twice a year generally the day after we have given up on them coming to do it and done it with a brush cutter which takes us 2 days to get done.

That sounds like ours too. I swear I think they keep driving by waiting to see if I've mowed yet, then they say "Ok, he's done part of it, lets go."

Last couple of times that they've actually done it before me, they stopped at the beginning of my property and left just my patch unmowed.

Me: "?!"
