If you could only own one trailer...

Runner: there are only two reasons people buy low boys: 1) They have height considerations and 2) They want to save the money (low boys cost less)

The other great thing a deckover does is move debris. You can load it up, drive it to a burn pile, and push stuff right off over the side with your loader. Or you can pile dirt on it and scoop it from one side and the other. No fenders to beat up, the wheels are protected and never in the way...

I'm satisfied with my 20' H&H tilt bed trailer for most uses. Easy to tilt and drive on (no ramps needed). 82" between the fenders which are also removable for easy side loading. Much lighter and lower to the ground than a gooseneck or deckover. But some people need multiple trailers. I certainly wouldn't want to use a 20ton equipment trailer to haul a motorcycle so you get a trailer that suits your needs.

All:

I appreciate the opinions and advice. I'm not sure when one will be purchased; but I figure to the time to start asking questions is now and not when I have to make a decision in a hurry.

MrJimi has me beat- I only have 8 trailers, gotta catch up:eek:
If I only had one it would have to be my dump trailer, it can do everything but haul a car or a boat. My BX24 fits in it just fine and of course there is no practical substitute for hauling rock/dirt.
Wonder why nobody makes a rollback type trailer....hmmmm.. One with removeable sides to haul stone, could drop it back and unload with FEL and still haul cars/tractors/motorcycles/atv's etc.

I'd say if one could only have one trailer, which is what I have, it had best be chosen for whatever conditions must be met at the time!!:D :D :D

After the trailer company i work, was bankrupt and then taken over, the new owner wants to clear some old junk.
I am thinking of buying a surplus frame of a cancelled order, and build a tilt deck out of it, with 30 cm aluminium sides, 18mm coated plywood floor (with crossmembers every foot to make this thin, lightweight floor take the axle loads of tractors)
Steel or hardwood floors are simply too heavy for me. also expensive.
Then i would make the stakepockets foldable, so i could put the sideboards horizontal to make it wider when taking a load of hay.
This would be bed over axles, with 255/50 B12 Trelleborg balloon tires, giving a deck height of about 64 centimeter ( just about 2 foot)

I'll just have to cut myself a deal with my new boss about the parts, and tag plates.

i think my perfect trailer would be.

-between the fenders
-wood deck
-no dovetail
-ramps
-torsion axle
-hydraulic dump
-bumper pull
-stake pockets, D-rings, flush mount LED lights
-"custom" hub to match tow vehicular bolt pattern so spares are enterchangeable

-would be general equipment trailer
-car hauler
-stake pockets would allow 2' sides for material dump trailer.

-18' lenght
-2 5000 lb axles (like 10K GVW, 8K tare)

The above would ONLY mean i need 3 trailers
-equimpent (above)
-my 5x10 utility
-bumper pull livestock

if that didnt happen then you have like 5?

-equipment
-light duty car hauler (open center, likely weighs half what the equiment trailer does)
-utility
-livestock
-dump

all bumer pull to keep it simple and easy to lend out (or barrow a buddies truck)

As most everybody says, no one trailer can do everything perfectly. It's a compromise. One thing's for sure, make sure it's long enough to position your tractor, and what ever's attached to it, for proper tongue weight. Our 20' lowbed pumperpull is just barely long enough when the trractor, with FEL, is carrying either the backhoe or the bushhog.

I can only afford one trailer and for what I do a dump trailer got the job. I can transport my mini excavator and tractor. Remove or haul in material. Yes there are better options for the things I want a trailer for but none rolled into one versatile trailer.

Here's mine...14k, 20', slide in 6' ramps, hydraulic dump, D rings in bed, heavy loads I use WD hitch, I welded removable sides and tailgate on it...very happy with my ultimate trailer, (do have a smaller one, though).
