ih 424
Recently purchased my first tractor, an IH 424 which starts and runs well for an old tractor. Knew when I bought it that there was an issue with the throttle...idled fine, but when moving hand throttle to higher range it wouldn't change and then all of a sudden would rev up pretty high and sometimes doing so on its own. After reading a few posts I advanced the throttle while the engine was off. When I advanced the hand throttle from low to about mid throttle the governor control rod and rock shaft were moving correctly however as I advance it further only the control rod continues to move while the rock shaft remains still. As I move the throttle further the rock shaft begins to move again. Not sure if this is a broken spring or gear stripped, have never done work on governor and not sure if this is a fix at farm or take to a mechanic. Thanks.

If you're meaning the control rod going to the carb. from the governor, they.., at least the ones on my smaller C-113 & C-123 engines do that. That is controlled by the flyweights, bushing & thrust fork and held in place by a spring. Being it starts to move again when pulling back more on the hand throttle, I would guess the thrust bearing has come apart. A pretty common thing with the smaller IH engines. They are fairly simple to replace, but you do need to remove the governor. Hopefully you have some sort of repair manual. Even an I&T will get you through this repair.

Normally, if the bearing is bad, they won't (C-113's &123's) won't go much above 1/3 throttle. However, if the spring breaks, I have seen the engine run away.

Here is an exploded view of the Gov. on your 424, and that is assuming it is a gasser. #31 is what I would check. Thanks for the reply. By control rod I mean from throttle to governor and rock shaft is from governor to carb. No I don't have the service manual ( only have operator manual), didn't know if tearing open the governor and replacing parts would throw off timing? The throttle does get to about 1/3 then seems to miss and then picks up again as throttle approaches high and vice versa when decreasing throttle. It is gas.

As long as #19 in the exploded view doesn't move forward, and disengage from the drive, it won't change the timing. And there is no real reason it would. Just take it easy pulling the cover off. Straight off, as much as possible, if possible.

It would probably be easier to remove the front cowling, and fan shroud to give you a little room to work, but not sure how much room there really is on that tractor. Unpin the linkages, then remove, probably 5 bolts holding the gov. cover on. If your careful, the cover will come off, and not damage the gasket IF it is original. If someone has had it off before, and lots of gasket cement, who knows. It's not that hard to tap out another one with the ball end of a smallish ball pein hammer, and proper thickness piece of gasket material. It may take a good few bumps with the heel of your hand to break it loose. Or, if you have a dead blow hammer, or decent sized rubber mallet. If you don't have either of those, be sure and place a block of wood on the cover, and bump it with a metal hammer.

When you pull the cover off, you should be looking at the thrust bearing. There should be 3 pieces to it. More than likely the ball bearing cage has come apart, and let the tiny bearings drop out. Years ago on the A's, B's & C's, the bearing cage was metal. The last one I got was plastic.

Still wouldn't hurt to get at least an I&T manual to go by. TSC should have, or be able to get you one.

Took governor casing off and thrust bearings seem fine. Fly weights in tact Other culprits? Thanks

All of the ball bearings are intact in the bearing cage between the halves..?? Did you move the fly weights to make sure they move smoothly..?? Seems there was another thread a while back about IH governor problems. Fly weights were sticking somewhat. Can't remember exactly what the problem was.

Other than a weak/broken spring, I'm, not sure. Sounds like something is binding up somewhere.

Have you checked the control rod to the carb, from the gov. arm, and see if is rubbing, causing it to hang up..??

Bearings are in cage yes. Fly weights move freely. Saw on another site about Leef spring(maybe #9 on parts diagram)?

Could very well be, the older governors on my smaller engines don't have that spring. Just checked Messick's, and it's still available... Rather pricey though, at $128.65. I ran the part number through Google, and it doesn't seem to be offered through aftermarket dealers.

Replaced main governor spring, seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the input.
