IH 720 plow

Here's a pic of my "new" IH 720 plow, it's a 4 btm 18 in. Is a semimount, has side hill hitch, and auto spring loaded resets. I'm hoping to use it to tame my jungle. This plow has a high clearance so should be good hopefully in the thick sod and old corn stalks.

Yes the tractor is mine. It has taken some getting used to because of its size but I like it. Couple things have surprised me about it; the power steering is extremely smooth and handles like a smaller tractor and the two rear remotes hook up very easy. I was expecting a battle when I hooked up the plow but it was not to be.

When I was a kid, I had a plastic model of an IH 1466 and a semi-mount plow like yours. Was a lot of fun to put together and I think I actually learned a thing or two about tractors by doing it.

Yes, I do to. Makes me a bit nervous thinking about the first time I use it, I am used to pulling a 2 bt plow and I have a feeling this will be a bit different.

Wow!! Nice rig. You'll be able to do some serious sod busting with your 1066/720 setup.

You're in another league compared to me. Only have 10 acres total, 7 acres pasture that I plan to make into a hayfield later this year.

Just got an IH #8 Little Genius 2-14 trailer plow (1940s vintage) to go with my MF-135. Plow cost $350, but shipping was twice that (darn $3.85/gal diesel).

Need to fix a low oil pressure problem on the 135 before I can play with that plow.

How much did you pay for that 4-bottom plow?

I am curious as to what you paid for it also. When I was plow shoping the International plows were expensive. I ended up buying a Massey Ferguson 880 5-16 plow for $127 with hydraulic resets. It was a base 4 bottom with a add on fifth. I had to unbolt the rear wheel assembly, unhook the hydrauilc lines, remove the fifth bottom and put the rear wheel assembly back on and hook up the hydraulics again. So now I have a 4-16 with the fifth bottom to rob parts off of if needed (so far I stole a pin off of it for the hydrualic reset cylinder).

I noticed a huge difference between my 3-14 and the 4-16 so I am sure you will love how fast you get things plowed going from your two bottom to a 4-18. It is a nice rig.

In contrary to what you said, you may want to put the dual on that rear left tire. It will help keep you from slipping as much. Atleast that's how we do things where I'm from, but those old IH plows especially the 720 and 735 were good plows.

Something else to add, not sure if you've used an in the furrow plow before, but you'll need to make sure that the rear right tire is set in to follow the front tire. Just trying to help ya out!

I've always been amazed at hte small tires that you boys in Pa use on tractors! A 1066 with 18-4-38's is small tired in this area and 20.8-38's is more the normal. Either way 4-18's will easily be pulled with a 1066. Do you have diff lock?

Robert in NY---I paid $1400 for the plow and it was much cheaper than any White or Ford plow that I looked at. From what I have gathered the White/Ford are King of the Sod.
Funkster--I think the tires are setup all right, but I will check again.
Rob--When I start to plow I will get some pics, at least some after I learn what I'm doing!!
Flusher---Those Lil Genius plows are supposed to be real good plows, and you are right, the shipping is awful.
Art---I wanted the 38's but they came with the dual 34's. They are radials and are at about 80% tread but are Goodyear, and I know lots of folks don't like the Goodyear tires. Yes the 1066 does have diff lock.

That is roughly the price I was finding for this type of International plow up around here. I had to drive to Columbus, Ohio to buy mine where plows are cheap now as most have went to no-till.

I looked for Ford and White plows but the only ones I found up here were beat bad and the dealers still wanted a fortune for them.

It's amazing that the White, (Ford last built 1986 I think) hold the resale value as well as they do. We have both in our area and You don't find 4-18's for that kind of money here! The 720's biggest plus for clearence is the fore to aft for the crop to follow through. They will plow right though what will plug a White plow even the 598 doesn't hold a candle to them. The good part is the non-trip vertical lift that doesn't bring up every stone!

On the tires, sorry to hear that you have the good year tires. The size is wrong for trying to get the horsepower to the ground. Years ago we were short tractors and I remember going to PA to pick up a tractor for a sale. We took the 18-4-34's off the ten and put 18-4-38's on to help it get it's work done. The good years are normally so bad on the farm that to switch them out to another brand would make a big difference. They normally are like running he next size smaller!

I never heard that on Goodyears. I think everything I've got has them on it. I don't do any row crop type work though.

Great looking plow and tractor you have there Oloezz. Bet that 1066 is a pulling rig. I used to see a lot of them around here pulling round balers.

Goodyear doesn't have a great reputation in the ag field but I have them on my TN and they are a decent tire. I do prefer Firestone though but that is only because I can not justify the cost of Michelins. But when I bought my TN in 99 I requested Goodyears over the Titans they came with. My tractor showed up with Titans on it and I refused to accept it until they put on Goodyears like I requested. I do not think very highly of Titan tires and I think Titan and Goodyear are one company but I can't remember for sure.

Hi Bill, my issue with the Titans at the time I bought the TN was that all of the Titan tires on the lots were checking real bad while the goodyears were in good condition. I didn't want a brand new tractor with tires that were new but checked like a 10 year old tractor left outside.

I have not had any puncture issues with my dynatourqe II's except for a piece of steel and I drive my TN thru red brush chopping back and forth so I don't baby them. Traction wise I prefer Firestones. And I am not happy with the way the Goodyears are wearing. The front 11.2-24's are going to need to be replaced in 4-5 years while the back tires are wearing but not as bad. Since I took the TN off of the main tillage duty the tires are lasting longer but I will only buy Firestones from now on unless I can afford a set of Michelin XM108's
