Here - Here!

I couldn't agree more. I'll also add to that a short story. My hometown (20,000 population) HS just built a $20 million "Performing Arts Center". Now it sits empty, used last year 12 times. What a boondoggle.

Right on Pete!
When I was growing up the only people who got to play football was the wealthy and influential children. Football is a money pit and straps the rural school systems. They might lose art, music, industrial arts, but gosh-durn they have football!

Re: I\'m an unnamed local celebrity!

My stance is pretty obvious, but I have to poke fun at this one.. I would not be able to live with myself if I didn't.

Maybe I'm one of very few who did relatively well at both sports and books, but I think football was the single biggest influence on my life. It may also be that I am a tremendous computer geek. The two factors together, having the computer "gene" as well as being athletically inclined, predisposes me to have the creativity of a slab of rock. But I just don't see the tragedy of a Performing Arts Center sitting empty.

My wife tried to drag me to a play one time... I beat mySELF up with a ball bat to not have to go. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

$20 Million to build. Now not used very much (if at all). Money could have gone to education (readin', writin', 'rithmatic) programs which are lacking. But on the bright side, they sure do have a pretty building there. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: I\'m an unnamed local celebrity!

getut you and I think alike!! And to those that think football drains a budget it doesn't. I do know the #'s for all of the US high school and college budgets. Girls volleyball drains more of a budget than football does. As far as uniforms and such 78% of those costs are paid for by booster money. A football stadium in most high school areas also serves as the PE field, track field, etc. If you look at the #'s, football for cost is right in the middle. Basketball in most schools is the most costly. Football on average brings in 25x the money that any other sport does besides basketball. Basketball is #2.

As far as rugby heck yes that is by far the toughest sport in the world bar none. You have to have the grit of a football player and the conditioning of a soccer player and yes it's all without pads.

Re: I\'m an unnamed local celebrity!

Way to go getut!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I always cringe at the term 'soccer mom'. One of our three daughters played soccer. I, not my wife, was the one that went to all the games, took her to practices, etc. At times she was playing three leagues at once. I'm no mom! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For her, soccer was a full contact sport. Broke her nose twice, knocked unconscious once, and a torn ACL. The travel leagues were OK, but the rec. league was her favorite.... where she could go head to head against the boys. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I\'m an unnamed local celebrity!

Back in the Mid 90's I was a High School Athletic Director. Did it for 3 years. We were a small school with about 250 students. We had just about every sport except for football.

No sport made any significant amount of money. We only charged admission for night soccer games and all basketball games. Admission never covered game day expenses. The cost for officials and game management personel always exceeded gate receipts.

My two biggest budget line items were bus transportation (first) and game officials (a close second). Coach's salaries were a distant third.

The actual cost to field a team in any sport was about the same.
