Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Looks good but the Cu looks a little high. Breakin? The Fe wear looks like the rings seating in.

Based on that the oil looks like a 10 to 12K miles changes look ok to do. 6K is way too soon.

I WILL go on this one with you! had many cars and many othe vehicles, tractors, atvs, garden tractors, lawmowers, weed wackers, etc. never had one fail for engine lubrication problems. just change the oil regular.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

I'd get into this subject on oil changes, but it is really not worth it. Some people will always believe they need to run synthetic oil. Others will believe they need to have oil tests done. Then there are the guys that change their oil as per manufacturer and use dino and have no problems whatsoever. To each their own as it is your money anyways.

It appears the real deciding factor of weather you test the oil or not may come down to how much of a hobby oil is in your life.
'Hobby' doesn't begin to describe it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

oil testing is not needed but priceless info. You do not have to do it at all, but it sure is nice info to have. And doing a simple $15 could say hundreds down the road.

Same with dino, it works sure but I know I save moeny and will protect better longer with synthetics then and dino out there. Yup, it is my money and I save more by not use a dino.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,
When I was at my dealers shop getting my 50 hour service on my excavator the mechanic made a comment I thought could pertain to this thread. On the excavator most things have a one year warranty hydraulic's drive motors etc. What he said was before your warranty was to expire you should have a test done on all your fluids. I thought this to be a bit extreme and somewhat costly. But after discussing this further he said you could have a problem that is lurking and waiting to pop-up after warranty expires. The tests will tell if there is metal, water etc in your hydraulics, drive motors and the condition of your motor oil. If after getting the test results you see that a problem is just around the corner, now is the time to let the dealer and mfg know. Although it might not be noticeable to the eye or ear it could be costly in the near future. If the MFG and dealer decide to do nothing at the present at least you have documentation to prove your case down the road /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. I think it is cheap insurance and might save the cost of a expensive repair. Obviously the mfg wouldn't recommend it as it would do nothing for them but possibly cost them money.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Here's how I test my engine oil. If I find metal parts in the oil I know something is coming unglued. Steel = camshaft, bronze bearing material= bearings are going, non metalic metal = usually pistons. I'll use dino till I die as I have never kept a vehicle for for more than 176,000 miles. That vehicle 1986 Honda Accord and the other 175k 1995 Chevy S10 Blazer, both used a quart of oil between oil changes. The reason the Chevy started using oil was because it blew an oil line from the remote filter. My wife drove it untill the motor seized up. I pulled the motor and replaced only the crank bearings. That amount of usage is well below the normal rate of consumption expected by the auto manufacturers. I can see testing your oil if you have a new piece of equipment and it is getting close to being off of warranty. That is a CYA in any case.

Well, until I read Nobull1's post I pretty much concluded I would probably never send any oil out for testing...now I might one time, for the reasons he stated.

Thanks to all for their input, and especially to GSXR1100 for standing tall in his beliefs. The link he provided above ( web page ) is especially interesting and worth a look if you have not already checked it out.

In the end, I personally will use my money for oil and filter changes on my personal machines, which I have a pretty good feel for. If they were not under MY direct control I would think more along the lines of GSXR1100. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif But they are, so I won't... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
