Todd, I've been hauling six-5 gal containers to Walmart in the back of my pickup once or twice per week at least while building ponds and dams. I have seen a 100 gallon pickup tank that I believe would be ideal for me. Everytime I go to get fuel, it uses 1 gallon in my truck and takes over 1/2 hour for the round trip (22 mi), not to mention un-capping, recapping, and hoggin' those 5 gallon containers in/out of my pickup.

My recent event where somebody "borrowed" one my tractors has had people asking if any fuel was taken. Not only was no fuel taken, but there was 15 gallons of fuel sitting in my pickup truck parked right beside the tractor that was "borrowed." As I suspected, this was about somebody who needed a tow and didn't come to steal. They helped themselves to my tractor, but didn't steal anything. I'm just sure glad my tractor was repaired and they didn't run out 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid all over the ground. Maybe I need a big Out-of-Order sign to hang on the steering wheel.

Ask a local supplier if they deliver anywhere near you and tell them next time they are in the area you will be happy to meet the delivery truck and fill your 50 gallon tank.

Since he lives in NY there probably is someone nearby that heats their home with an oil furnace. Same stuff as Diesel Supreme. Timing would be tough to meet the truck.
They can fill a 275 gallon tank and be gone quicker than you fill a car in town.
As far as price, it varies greatly but we can't wait for a price drop when harvest is ready and the tank is near empty. Our distributor has a minimum
amount of 175 gallon without a sir charge. Good clean fuel and good service
for the last 20 some years. They deliver tractor oil, hydraulic oil, and grease at the same time. A great time saver.

now thats an idea... now to find a willing company... ;)

Consider how much diesel has gone up each year the past few years.
Off road has gone up porportionally. It would be nice for you but the someone
near you willing to sell you 50 gallon will be paying more than you paid him just to replace the same 50 gallon next time.

off road prices might have gone up - but should be cheaper then on road due to taxes difference. As for your comment for guy paying more..... hmm I just dont see how. If I left my barrel there prepaid for 50 gallons while supplier fill his tanks.... just where is the loss?

That was not your original plan. You said: "it would be nice If I knew someone near me that gets off road in their tanks willing to sell me 50 gallons at a time"
In 2010 I paid $2.74 per gallon for off road diesel. In 2011 it was $3.70 per gallon. You can call a distributor in your area to see what it is now.
My point was.... based on your original plan, that whomever you purchased your 50 gallon from would lose $50 selling it to you versus using it in his own equipment based on historical prices in my area.
I doubt if NY is much different.
If you can find somebody that will allow you to leave an empty barrel to be filled on his property based on NY fuel liability laws, go for it.
The convenience of having fuel available when needed and not having to lift 5 gallon cans of fuel over 5 feet in the air to reach the inlet of the tractor tanks makes having an elevated gravity flow tank worth it to me and thousands of others.

Jim,
Those tanks are neat.
I wonder what 700 extra pounds of fuel jogging around in a tank like that
would do to your truck gas mileage and stopping distance?
Would your liability insurance rate be effected do to the increased risk in an accident, collision, and clean-up?

As I've posted elsewhere, you just need a couple of small accessory tanks. IBC's. See pic

attachment.php

and your good to go.

I figure I can run a tractor for about 500 hours if these were filled, or drive my TDI VW for about 22,000, or drive my 7.3L Ford for 8,000 miles.

These hold from 225 to 375 gallons and are widely available, prices are from "here you take it you clean it" to about $150 for "fresh cleaned ready for yuppies rainwater collection". Fittings are easy to obtain.

Like others have mentioned put a premium on convenience. Perhaps few on here remember gas lines, but during those times my Dad kept the fuel tank at the house topped off, while others waited in line for hours.

A pump can cost from ~ $50 to $200 depending on how fancy you want to get.

Doubt your insurance would increase in cost (agent) but might find it is not covered. Read your policy. Mounted would be a benefit I think legally and insurance wise in case of accident but then cargo can be treated different and a portable tank sould be considered cargo.

Jim ... Keep an eye on CL and be patient I could have bought a 110 gallon L-shape last fall (no pump) $175 ... for me that was just not enough... recapping, funny you mention that cause about a week ago I filled my 50 gallon tank and drove off with out putting the cap on, when I stopped at w-mart I smelled fuel and the cap was laying in the bed of the truck and the entire bed was soaked ... thats "part-timers"

Great setup!

I am jealous, but I think it would take the BX 20 years to burn that much fuel...
