With our kids away at church camp, my wife and I decide to have a date night. So last night we went and saw "Poseidon" at the IMAX in the Quad Cities and all I can say is WOW! Imagine a screen 5 stories high, 7 stories wide and a 12,000 watt sound system. If you ever get a chance to see a IMAX movie, take it.

Yep, IMAX is impressive. So far the only one we've seen was at the Air Force Museum at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

I've never been to an IMAX yet but I'd love to one day - I've heard they show shorter versions of the movie though for some reason - I know for a fact when they had the Star Wars prequels in IMAX theatres there were certain scenes cut out to reduce the running time :(

There are IMAX theatres in most major metropolitan markets. I have been to several around the country. However, they are not usually freestanding theatres like a normal screen theatre. They are usually inside of or attached to another attraction such as a zoo or museum. If you ask, you can usually go to just the movie itself without paying addmission to the other attraction. Movie only admission runs $6-9 for an adult. Larger IMAX theatres have multiple movies per day. Movie A at 10Am 2Pm and 6Pm and movie B at noon, 3PM, 9Pm, etc. The image is so realistic, people are warned about getting motion sick. Just close your eyes for 10 seconds and you will recover and be able to resume watching.

Another great type of theatre is the one where there is an image projected 360 degrees around a large round room. The audience stands and mills around in the center. As you turn around, it appears like real life so you can see what is behind you, beside you or in front. This system is actually a set of 8-20 individual projectors where the screen edges line up perfectly. Look above the center of the room and you can see all the light beams.

When we lived near Edmonton, Alberta there was an IMax in town. The shows we attended were terrific. The really neat ones involved airplanes and cars. Rollercoasters were just like being on the real thing.

There is one in Halifax now.

A couple weeks ago, we got back to Tennessee after flying out to San Diego to pack Sister in law up. We packed her up (her belongings :p ) and drove back across the country.

Stopped at Grand Canyon... in addition to some of the local sites to see, we saw an IMAX movie about the Canyon...

There are simply some things that IMAX does better and the Grand Canyon is one of them!

At our local Imax a few years ago I took the family to see the "Lewis and Clark Expedition". It was awesome!!! We did get a little motion sickness. The film had us going over waterfalls in a canoe, flying like an eagle, etc...
