"implement end only" PTO slip clutch?

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

Do you think you could mount this one on the tractor PTO shaft?

If you are trying to adapt a shaft and slip clutch that you already have, then I would think the slip clutch you have would work in either direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) or on either end of the PTO shaft. Just think it would be supported better if it were on the implement end, given you could get it to work that way around.

Sounds like rigging the one you have to work would not be easy without some sheet metal work. Maybe getting a look at the PTO shaft that is right for your 'implement' would give you some helpful hints as to what is needed. I am puzzled by the 6 spline male shaft coming from your gear box.

I don't know if this will help or not. I bought a used Land Pride tiller. It only had the slip clutch on the tiller. The other half of the PTO shaft was missing. I bought a new slip clutch and pto shaft from Tractor Supply. The clutch end bolts to the shaft. the other end has a quick disconnect. I put it on the PTO.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

If it is a typical friction disc style slipclutch as you describe, it will work in either rotation. If it will clear everything around the tractor output shaft, it is OK to use it oriented that way so long as nothing gets tangled up in it. I hope it has a quick disconnect yoke on that end. Sure will get tiresome using the more common pinch bolt on the tractor end.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

Unfortunatly, it has the pin-type disconnect and not the collar-type disconnect. It is a bit of a pain to get your hands behind the clutch on tractor-side of the PTO because of the shield around it. I'll try to post some photo's in a little while.

It's a bit worrysome to me though. I put it all together and tilled a short patch of garden known to not have any boulders, but it does have some loose rocks. I had the slip clutch bolts very very loose and it didn't slip a bit. I'm thinking it should have slipped even some?

Here's a picture of the slip/ratchet (?) clutch thingy that came came with my 'tiller. Can anybody what it is and what it's suppose to do? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

That is in fact an over-running clutch, but they're ordinaily affixed to the tractor's PTO spline - typically with a roll pin. When you take the PTO-driven implement off the tractor, the ORC generally stays on the tractor.

But as I stated before, if you've got a live PTO/2 stage clutch - or a hydrostat for that matter - there's no reason to use an ORC.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

An over running clutch should not be used on a tiller. It basically is worthless. The overrunning clutch is typically used when you have a mower on the tractor when your PTO is transmission driven like on the older ford tractors. If you didn't use a ORC you could put the clutch in but the tractor would keep moving forward. A tiller would stop pretty fast and not force the tractor to keep moving.

At least that is what I know of a ORC.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

That is in fact not an ORC. It is not possible to twist the female spline while holding the clutch body; it does not over-run. It is a uni-directional torque limiting clutch as I described earlier. If driven in the wrong rotation , it provides no driveline protection.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

Dustin,
I believe that the torque limiting clutch needs to be installed as close to where the damaging torque input would be in most cases, the input shaft to the gearbox. You would also get your telescoping PTO shaft protected by installing it that way. I've never seen one installed at the tractor end of the shaft (that would leave the PTO shaft unprotected from the torque).
