"implement end only" PTO slip clutch?

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

( It's a Weasler 560-6006 slip clutch. If I were to describe it, it has two plates with six sets (two each) of bolts (with springs) connecting the two plates, and a friction disk sandwiched in the middle. )

Sorry. I was temporarily distracted by the photos that DirtHauler posted, and I only just now realized they have nothing to do with your original question. Friction-type slip clutches are meant to be used with the clutch component on the implement end.

Take a look at page five in THIS BROCHURE, where you'll find confirmation that it goes on the implement end.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

I have a new KK II with a slip clutch and need to know how to adjust it. A couple of times it stopped the tractor motor dead /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif . Owners manual said nothing about adjustments for it. Can any one help as to how to adjust and what tension to set it to...

Thanks

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

What brand is the actualy slip clutch itself? And the model of the KK might help also?

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

OK, wrote to Mark at CCM about what I have and this is his reply;

Norm,

The clutch you have pictured is called a bi-directional Ratchet Pawl Clutch. The tension is pre-set from the factory. When this clutch slips it makes a sound like a machine gun. The advantage this clutch has is you will not have to worry about slipping it every year like you need to with a 2 plate clutch. This clutch will work in either position. Never grease this style clutch or you will cause it to fail.

A ORC or over-run clutch, free wheels in one direction and will not slip in the other direction. You do not have a ORC clutch.

Mark Carter

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

You don't say if you had the tiller running at full rpm when you "jammed" the tire iron into it and stalled the tractor. If you were, then I'd say the clutch that you have has too high of tension for your tractor and needs to be replaced with a lower tension one.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

i "assumed" you could adjust the tension on a slip clutch by tightening or "un" tightening the nuts on the springs?? making them as close to equal as possible??

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

I was tilling near the edge of a concrete patio, I believe I was running at about 1800 - 2000 rpm when it jambed. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

heehaw - you are correct, the clutch plate type is adjusted just as you said, but DirtHauler indicated that he had a ratchet pawl clutch and I don't think that they can be adjusted - I may be wrong.

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

a new slip clutch is $105 at tractor supply..anyone know how
the price compares to this type of clutch??? and how well this type works/last?? i have got to replace the clutch on a couple pieces of equipment, i drilled an bolted an old one last week so i could get the brush hogging done, but i prefer not to leave it that way..

Re: \"implement end only\" PTO slip clutch?

Thanks to everyone who posted. I was able to speak with an engineer from the manufacturer (finally), and he indicated that most, if not all, PTO slip clutches are marked to indicate installation on the implement end only. The reason for this is only because the ASE (?) recommends this approach because of heat build-up in the clutch itself. You don't want that heat being transferred up the PTO output shaft and into your tractor transmission. Not a big deal for me, so the clutch is currently mounted on the tractor end PTO output shaft. So far, I've killed a few big hidden rocks that locked the tiller up solid and the slip clutch worked as expected (thank goodness). Again, thanks to everyone who posted!!
