You know if any of the large rental companies rent implents for the M5040? I was thinking about renting a grabble since I will only need it for a week. Wish I knew someone in the area I could borrow one from for a small fee.

The Kubota FEL on a M5040 has a skid steer type attachment. You may be able to rent a skidsteer grapple bucket from a local place that rents skidsteers and their attachments. With some skidsteer attachments a tractor won't have enough hydraulic flow to run them, but I don't think that would be an issue with a grapple. You will of course need a third function valve to run a grapple - I think the M5040 comes standard with one rear remote and that would work, as long as you can get hoses that are long enough to run from it to the grapple.

You could also just rent a skidsteer with a grapple, though of course that would cost a bit more.

I just got a quote from Millonzi for the 60" light duty grapple. once you add the extra $120 (for Kubota mounting) $198 shipping you would only be saving $67 compared to the Kubota quote.
There is a substantial difference in price between the 48LD and the 60LD. You don't mention the actual grapple quote but I think guys are getting quotes of between $850 and $1050 depending on the mount plus shipping. I'm sure Millonzi and dealers are recommending larger grapples for a 50hp tractor. I just haven't been convinced that a larger, heavier, more complex and significantly more expensive grapple gets you much more capability than the 300lb 48LD. I've posted a bunch of photos elsewhere in TBN.

Here are some things that a 41hp tractor with a loader (KL401) about the same as a JD400x or a Kubota LA853 can do with a LD48. The last photo shows the amount of brush I could grapple with a smaller tractor and same grapple.

I have read several of your posts, but they are just not coming though on cost. Here are the prices he provided me. Now on top of the price he quoted me $450.00 freight. So the 48" unit would run $1,491.00 shipped to my work. I can get the WR Long shipped to my dealer for $1,300.00 and some change. Left the quote at home.

60 unit is $1554.00 + $120.00
48 unit is $921.00 + $120.00

Problem is I have to add another $800 for third function which means I am looking at $2,100.00. Still trying to decide if buying one is right for me.

It is the freight price that is very high. Maybe rates have really gone up that much but that is the highest I've seen.

Consider using rear remotes to control the grapple as a way to knock off the cost of third function valve.

The other solution is to add a grapple arm to your standard bucket. Lots of guys like that arrangement which I suspect is fine for someone who only needs a grapple for "a week". You may end up using it for two weeks due to the less efficient arrangement compared to a true grapple but that would be by far your cheapest option. Use the rear remotes to control it and you should be able to get the whole set up for about $500 or so.

I did think about that and it would help but I also want the grapple to pick up some trees the logging company left behind. Not sure the bucket with top arm would work well????

I think I am leaning towards a 48" unit again. I walked my property and man I will hate life using my bucket. :(

I asked them for a quote on the 48" shipped to my business address. We will see if they are able to provide a better price.

I now recall that I actually just had them ship it to the FedEx terminal and that I rented an open trailer from UHaul to get it myself. This was two years ago before the shipping rates started to climb but I got the grapple, forks, and a tree boom delivered for a total of $150 in shipping from Ohio to a Massachusetts FedEx terminal.

I recommend that you buy a bushhog that has the 2 tailwheels. I also would buy a 7 foot if possible. I have a Kubota M4800 (43 pto horsepower) with a 6' cutter behind it and usually don't even know it's there. Definitely go with 2 tailwheels. I will next time.

I am in the same boat as you with need for a 3rd function. I was talking to my dealer and told him I needed it to remove a demoed house/basement and general farm work. He said he could rent a bobcat/grapple for $1060/week + insurence + tax. I think I may go ahead and bite the bullet on this. If I find I do not use the grapple all that much after the construction work I will sell it.

I doubt you'd have any trouble selling a grapple especially if it had a universal mount.
