them sub compacts and compact tractors. look like oversized lawn mowers. with a loader and 3pt hitch. i litterly want to run away from them. ... i honestly do see them sub compacts and compacts. as a waste of cash to me. just not enough tractor there. they have there market. but for me. give me something between construction equipment and full size field tractors. that doesn't depreciate so quickly.

Like everything, it's all about getting the right tool for the job, not about what's biggest. For instance, a guy who needs to just tote his his guitar and equipment around might be fine with an S10 or a Dakota. It would be foolish of him to buy a Peterbilt to do the job.

In buying any sort of equipment, you should always get what YOU need, not what might be "best," because that is totally subjective.

Yuppie is, as Yuppie does.

I have a B2620. I also have 130 acres. My tractor is sized to me, not to my farm.

I need to physically be able to work on, hitch up attachments and maintain my tractor, and I'm not comfortable doing so with anything bigger. Yes a bigger tractor would save me time, with larger implement width. Except when you factor in having to call someone to help every time I wanted to switch out the attachments.

My farm also has VERY steep slopes that are better served by a lower center of gravity machine (with filled tires). I seriously looked at the BX models before I got my B. The deciding factor was that I also have rocky creek beds I need to be able to cross, and that all the brambles and brush I need to beat back would probably kill that fragile HST fan.

I do also mow my lawn with it. Why have a cheap lawn "tractor" to maintain, when I can just hook up to my 5' finish mower, finish in 2/3 the time and burn less fuel?

When I was growing up, my neighbor had a classic JD model B for use on his very flat, civilized farm. I'm sure Mr. Crusty Farmer would have loved it, but here it would be completely useless.

I am happy as a pig in mud with my little farm tractor.

Good points.
I used to own an old Ferguson TE20 w/a 5' brush hog to mow approx 4 acres and other chores when I was building my house. It did well but after awhile all it did was mow, I hardly had any other uses for it after I got my place "domesticated" and cut down my garden's size.
I now maintain the same little acreage w/a little ole SCUT, a BX23 and it mows the same acreage and maintains my little bitty garden at half the time and half the fuel that the TE20 used. And technically it actually does more tasks since it has an FEL & BH to boot. Course they're small little bitty implements but small is better than none atall. Did I mention I absolutely love the HST & power steering? :D
In my case, bigger was not better (ohhh nooo, hope that doesn't make me a, gulp, yuppie. Course if it does I still ain't drinking no fancy chocolate/vanilla coffee or eating fish eggs, a mans gotta draw the line somewheres) :D

And further, I go to work and sit behind a desk all day, in a very yuppie type of way. And I am pretty certain that I am the only person in my office of 150 people who owns a tractor

I take a beating in the office -but you know what -I don't mind when I am out plowing at 5am to get my yuppie car out of the driveway to get to the office (so I can afford my yuppie tractor) or when you couldn't get the smile off my face if you tried like on Sunday when I could get the chain saw and the tractor in the woods for some cleanup for the first time in a few months (though my muscles ached in a very yuppie sort of way on Monday as I headed into the office!)

Each to their own...

One good thing about Tractors is, they make them in all sizes, shapes, colors and prices to fit all . You don't always need the biggest to get the job done , just know what you want to do with it before you buy it .

Having operated 2 "farmers" tractors, I unabashedly admit that I really enjoy my little yuppie BX. I enjoy the power steering, quiet muffler, ropes system and canopy-the drink holder is nice too. The first "farmers" tractor was a JD 420 aka popping johnnie-my ears ring still. Ignition wasn't with a key, 2 wires twisted together-tippy with no ropes (they were for whiney guys), brakes not so much. I expect a little more and if I am going to put some money into a machine, it ought to do a lot of things well. With my yuppy tractor, I can do a variety of things and replace 2 pieces of equipment (tiller and mower). And it does look nice sitting nice to the yuppy pond too!

FYI... the 420 was the tiny "yuppie" tractor of it's day. How could that little fellow make your ears ring? Even with no exhaust, they are not that loud. It's ROPS. Roll Over Protection System. Ropes are for rigging.

thx for nice follow up!

and i do know there is a market for sub compacts and compacts. over on Koiphen.com were folks build 3,000 gallon to 12,000 gallon koi ponds. many times in DIY pond builds. folks get noted to contact local rental machinery place to get a small size tractor. with loader and backhoe. there small light weight, don't tear up the yard to bad moving dirt out, over the yard. and you can get them into tight small spaces. more so for city folks size backyards.

then you have proffesional landscapers that either trailer pull a skid steer with attachments or sub compact / compact tractor with attachments.

but once you break away from them city folks size yards. and a few acres of land to use a finishing mower. those sub compacts and compacts start loosing there flavor. atleast to me. and there tends to be a decent distinction in models from various companies once ya get into the utilty tractors that are 40hp and above. were a drink holder is less important than perhaps a better radiator guard. or belly mower is not automatic with tractor but perhaps a heavier duty frame, with wheels that might have more options for wheel widths.
