2012 John Deere 5093E
I have a 2012 JD 5093E..I bought it a couple of months ago with 64 hours on it..I believe the person that had it before me may have allowed it to idle a lot..It produces black smoke more than it should..My dealer cannot find anything wrong with it..I would like to get the best injector cleaner available to run through it...Will that help?

Looking for comments and suggestions..
Thanks

not unless you run it "straight" liqui-moly diesel purge .... mixing it in a tank just dilutes the cleaning effect.
a can of it will clean any injector system ( pump and injectors )

if you really want them "clean and spraying properly" pull the injectors and have a shop clean , adjust and pop test to get them all the same ....

Just buy the injector cleaner from Deere next time you go in the dealership. That way you can say you tried it and if it doesn't work they can't come back and blame it on that. Deere usually has good stuff, their ethanol treatment is very superior to anything else I've used. Glass cleaner is the best too, my girlfriend prefers that over anything she can buy in the store.

Think I'll try both! thanks

Hiya,

Dirty injectors are only one possibility for excessive black smoke in a Diesel. Other possibilities are clogged air filter restricting flow, low engine temp from a faulty thermostat, restricted/damaged intercooler, turbocharger issues (low RPM or issues in a variable geometry type), common rail mis-adjustment keeping the injector open too long, over-fuel adjustment on the pump, low quality or aged fuel.

Remember some smoking when the throttle is opened quickly or in high load situations is normal but you shouldn't be "rollin' coal"

My 2 cents,
Tom

Tom,
You summarize very nicely what I've learned in my research of this problem..The tractor is still at the dealer and has been checked by them..The service manager seemed to agree that it was smoking more than it should but said they could find no problem..He said the fuel injector timing was within spec and explained there was a 4 degree window for that spec and that they did adjust it slightly..I checked the tractor yesterday and it still seems to smoke excessively in my opinion...The service manager said that some just smoke more than others..The tractor is a 2012 model with only 80 hours on it..I bought it a month or two ago with 64 hours..The man that owned it before me mentioned to me that much of the time the tractor was just idling so I just don't know what else the problem could be.. I looked at another 2012 5093E that belongs to someone I know and it too seemed to smoke quite a bit but not as much as mine..I also spoke to someone over the phone who said that his too smoked "a little"..

When you say smoke, does it smoke at no load or under load?
The best thing to do is get a good fuel conditioner from Deere and run it hard under high load. An engine that has idled a lot will smoke heavy under load for a while till it burns out the carbon build up. I find it hard to believe that any damage was done in 64 hours.

Here is a write-up on JD conditioners:

Fuel-Protect Diesel Fuel Conditioner, Summer Formula
(TY26784, TY26785, TY26786)
Features and benefits
Boosts Cetane Number for faster, smoother, fuel efficient starting
Aggressive Detergents and dispersants clean and keep clean injectors helps prevent injector erosion, prevents emissions deterioration due to deposits, and cleans entire fuel system
Lubricity Improver for added protection and reduced fuel injection and pump wear when using Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel
Moisture Control improves water tolerance and helps minimize microbial growth
Maintains fuel pump warranty
Minimizes smoking
Compatible with all diesel fuels

Fuel-Protect Diesel Fuel Conditioner, Winter Formula
(TY26787, TY26788, TY26789)
Features and benefits
Boosts Cetane Number for faster, smoother, fuel efficient starting
Aggressive Detergents and dispersants clean and keep clean injectors helps prevent injector erosion, prevents emissions deterioration due to deposits, and cleans entire fuel system
Lowers Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) and Pour Point improving cold weather fuel flow
Lubricity Improver for added protection and reduced fuel injection and pump wear when using Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel
Moisture Control improves water tolerance and helps minimize microbial growth
Extends fuel filter life
Maintains fuel pump warranty

Does it still have fuel in it from when you bought it?

Fill it with fresh fuel with the treatments mentioned and run the SNOT out of it. Go plow up something or find some tractor tall grass to cut wet or something and put a load on it.

The tractor isn't even broken in yet.

Load it up heavy as you can and run it for several hours so the internals get very hot and that will burn the carbon off. I have seen AG tractors running at night under heavy load and you can see the exhaust manifold glowing along with the exhaust pipe. NO CARBON BUILD UP THERE.

I seem to remember someone else having a problem with a new JD emitting a lot of smoke. I tried to find the post but was unable to. I don't think he ever was able to eliminate the smoking and if memory serves said the dealer told him what you have been told, "Some Smoke".

okay thanks guys..I caught the Service Manager in time to have them throw a bottle of fuel conditioner in the cab before they deliver it back to me around mid day..I'll plan to give it a good workout this evening or tomorrow..Got lots of tall bahaigrass I can cut...

I think the smoke is normal for the 5093. Mine smokes a lot when running at lower rpm's or lower loads. Clears up at full rpm under high load, but lets out an occasional puff here and there. It's been like that since brand new, very hard on fuel for the size of the tractor but i seem to get about the same consumption as it is rated for. I burn about 20L/hour running a moco, 10l/hr loader work. I don't think the John Deere engineers had efficiency in mind when the built the E's injection system, but I knew JD's were hard on fuel when I bought it.

I 'll second everything you say..I got mine back from the dealer this morning..Smokes little to none at high rpm's even under load but was smoking at low rpm's and even at idle a little bit when accelerated..I added a can of sea foam, a heavy dose of Wal Mart diesel fuel treatment, and a heavy dose of John Deere's fuel treatment and mowed tall thick heavy bahaigrass for 2 hours..I noticed SIGNIFICANTLY less smoke after mowing! I'm loving this tractor now for the first time..Now if I can just find another job so that I can afford to keep fuel in it.. :)

Matt,

The only other thing that concerns me a little is that the hydraulics run hotter than any tractor I've ever used..My Kubota hydraulics never got hot..The aluminum hydraulic lines at the rear SCV's get too hot to hold with a bare hand when I've been mowing..Does your run that hot?

/ Injector Cleaners #16
Yes, my hydraulics get very hot also.

Matt,
Okay thanks you make me feel better..:) I had considered swapping for a new Kubota but I just got back in from making another few rounds with the mower and I'm thinkin this Tier 3 John Deere might just be worth keepin...

Have you had any problems and how many hours is on yours?

/ Injector Cleaners #18
Unfortunately I don't have news that you want to hear, lol. I have had many problems with mine and plan on getting something else when it fits my budget. My E has turned me off JD, probably not going to consider another one for a long time.

700 hours on mine now.

Crap..you really know how to take the wind out of a guys sail...:)

Care to elaborate on your problems???

I have a 12 year old 82 H.P. Kubota open station that has never had the slightest hiccup..If I should ever buy another I will not consider anything except a Kubota..

So far too many fluid leaks to count, gear shift problems, couple of switches in cab failed, turbo failure, and now I am waiting for the dealer to get back to me about a very loud bearing type noise in the transmission. I complained about it under warranty, dealer thought they fixed it but noise is still there. I am out of warranty now and have been waiting several months to find out if they are going to cover it.

It is a nice tractor to operate but I am very dissapointed in the quality, as well as the 3 point hitch.
